How much osmacote do I put into a 18" hanging basket?

The baskets are going to be mainly full of annual flowers. Petunias, bacopa, calibrachoa. They are around 12" deep. I also have some that are , I think 12". They are the hanging baskets that you see most ofter in department stores and nursuries, usually green. I live in zone 8.

How much osmacote do I put into a 18" hanging basket?
You can't really say exactly, just by zone and species. (Zone mostly refers to temperatures.)

I'd put a little extra in hanging baskets, especially if they drain freely -- as compared to ones with a catchment. There really is no one type of hanging basket... is it literally a basket, eg. made of fiber?

Also, what sort of soil will you be using? I prefer to use premixed potting soil for container plants, which often comes with fertilizer already in there.

That said, annuals are pretty hard to burn, especially if you get lots of rain and your baskets drain. But if you fertilize them too much, they can get leggy.

In the end, the only ways to get the perfect combination are trial and error or local experience. Have you tried looking up your local cooperative extension? These are educational facilities dedicated to helping all sorts of gardeners, and they will have location-specific information.
Reply:It's hard to overfertilize using osmacote....I wouldn't exactly " fill " the baskets with it, but since ur in zone 8, u have a long growing season. I would add maybe 5 or 6 tablespoons per 12" X 12" basket - and mix well with the soil. important to water BEFORE and after using. I live in zone 5 and really " jack" the soil in my pots with osmacote cause I want a good show in a short amount of time. good luck....
Reply:Use 1- 2 tablespoons of osmocote scattered around the soil of the basket. Do not let the osmocote sit on the plant, make sure it's on the soil. Also, I would suggest a soluble fertilizer along with the osmocote. We use both osmocote and peters at my greenhouse.

Reply:I think a tablespoon would be enough. Maybe two. (5 or 6 sounds wasteful).

The larger boxes do have good directions for a variety of uses.

I've always just sprinkled a bit on the surface.
Reply:Read the directions on the label...

Reply:All of those plants are pretty greedy annuals, and all time release fertilzers work best when dug into the soil. If you are making up the basket yourself, put about twice what they recommend as they never do last as long as they say they do on the label.

If the pot is already made up by the store, you will slow down their growth more by digging it in, so just put it on top. I'd put about three times what was recommended on the label to start, and in about half the time that they say they last, I'd again put about 2 times what they say.

This is potentially wasteful, but it is unlikely to burn your plants, and it is a quick and lazy way to get some spectacular color with minimum effort. As long as there's sun the calibrochoa will bloom madly no matter what you do, but you will need to pinch the petunias back with this much fertilzer. I'm not sure the bacopa will be able to keep up with the other two plants.

I need to know what type of flowers to plant in window boxes.?

I need to know what type of flowers to plant in window boxes. I have 5 window boxes under the house eaves that don't get natural rain water. I am a bad waterer so I need something that can go several days without water. I have tried wildflowers, petunias, dwarf sunflowers, and marigolds. No luck with those. I is mostly sun in NC. Any ideas?

I need to know what type of flowers to plant in window boxes.?
MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE.

How would you like to plant all your favorates back in those boxes %26amp; still have them looking good with you twice a week schedule?

Go to your nursery %26amp; pick up a small packet of med. sized soil polymers. mix them into the soil of the window boxes at the rate the package suggests. water the soil well, every day for 3 days before you plant. Water again the day you plant, and if you miss a few days, no biggy.

The polymers look like grains of rock salt when dry. Wet, each will swell to size of a dime holding water in reserve for the roots to use for days. As they dry out the slowly shrink, add water again %26amp; poof.

You should get twice the time between normal waterings with the use of the polymers.

Just in case you still want some of my ideas for your boxes (with or without polymer use) here are a few ideas.

Some will hang over the side, some bushier with color. All get along without alot of water ONCE ESTABLISHED! That means for the first week or two, YOU have to make sure they get water to give them a start.

Achillea yarrow bedding, your choice of color.

Armeria maritima, common thrift.

Verbena, bedding your choice of color.

Sedum stonecrop whiskey nose.

Oenothera dwarf, evening primrose.

Linum perenne.

Echeveria (mixed)

Mix %26amp; match, all will work well, AFTER THEY GET ESTABLISHED. If you can't give a little extra time the first couple of weeks, go to WalMart %26amp; grab some plastic Roses. There isn't anything anybody can do for you.
Reply:garden dok has my vote.
Reply:Petunias work well here, (Wi.) in window boxes or hanging baskets. Other plants that like sun are geraniums, both upright %26amp; vining, can go without water, for a few days, should fertilize about middle of summer. There are pansies, all colors, celosia which come in bright yellow, red, pink, snapdragons, zinnias, to name a few. I would suggest putting out buckets, gabage containers, etc. to collect rainwater. I still do this to save on water bill, also if you have water softenter, you have to let water sit for at least an hour before you water plants, salt is not good for plants. If you can't remember to water, you should use mulch around top of soil, this keeps soil moist longer. There are a few vines that like sun, vinca for one, also goes good between plants, unless you plant the vining geraniums. Experiment w/different plants, go to your area greenhouse where they can also help you, or go to library and check book on plants. (summer annuals) Good Luck!
Reply:There's really no flowering plant that can survive without water. My suggestion is for you to plant hardy green plant like ivy then add natural looking silk flowers.

Question on planting from seeds. I am told to wrapped the pot up with plastics. but for how long?

It's been about a week, i can see little seedlings growing out of the soil already. now i only loosely wrap the pot up with a huge translucent plastic bag. I read from the instructions that it is to keep the moisture in. I have tried seeds planting many times and failed. Most of the time, many many seedlings grows out but they just die in their original containers one by one after one or two months. Sometimes they grow quite big but died after i transfer them to separate pots. I use fertile packet soil for seeds growing. I keep the pot on the corridoor, away from direct sunlight, but it can get quite hot to 30 degress celsius. I live in tropical country Singapore, high temperature and humid air. Plants i grow are like petunia and sweet william, supposedly easy to grow. It's very depressing. Please help.

Question on planting from seeds. I am told to wrapped the pot up with plastics. but for how long?
the reason for wrapping is to create a hot house effect.try planting them again but this time leave them to the elements.do keep the soil moist but not wet.if your seedlings are getting to a certain stage then dying you could have a damping off disease.discard the potting mix.wash all pots and potting equipment in bleach and start again with new soil.you can identify damping off by looking near the base of the plant.if it looks very thin and black and the upper part of the plant looks normal then you have damping off.very common problem.

When the Dursleys went into hiding, were they living with wizards?

Or did they just live in a house that had the protective enchantments of wizards? If they were forced to live and interact with wizards for almost a year, how do you think it went? Do you think either Petunia or Vernon could have changed in their thinking after that?

When the Dursleys went into hiding, were they living with wizards?
Hey, I think they did live with wizards because one of them was like "oh we'll become really good friend". I always kinda wished after reading that, that Dudley had fallen in love with some witch and ended up in the end being part of the wizarding world (even it was just having children it in), but we might find out more in the Harry Potter Encyclopedia, since it's going to fill in alot for like all characters (hopefully including the Dursleys). I bet if they did live with wizards they were awfully scared of them, and never really adapted (Veron and Petunia), Dudley probably could more. I don't think V%26amp;P will ever change their opinions completely but they might become a little more lenient
Reply:they went to a house with protective enchantments. i don't think petunia would change her mind about wizards though. she lied with one growing up, and look at her now.

How long will it take for my window box plants to grow and are they growing quickly?

I put fish blood and bone in the soil and planted them on monday and i think they have noticeably increased in size already my neighbour even commented on them. I have trailing petunias, trailing fusia and trailiing pelargoniums.

How long till the trail and have lots of pretty flowers?

How long will it take for my window box plants to grow and are they growing quickly?
Not long, my baskets are already trailing, window boxes have a way to go, I have the same in both! just be sure to keep on top of the deadheading to keep them flowering!
Reply:Bedding growing season is actually mid june(when trailing starts) to end sept.If you plants are growing big already,it's bad news,as they will get exhausted sooner and need replacing at that difficult time when it's too late for more summer flowers, but too soon for winter ones.

The mix is not good as fuschias require different position to the other two. They like it a bit shady, the other two full sun.

Fish blood and bone, apart from being a disgusting animal holocust product is no good either. You need something that quickly get into the plants ie liquid plant food.FB/B is long term for shrubs etc.

Do not feed until end july when the nutrients run out, otherwises too much foliage at flowers expense
Reply:sprinkle them with vinegar not a lot of people know that it increases the speed and the quality at which petunias grow. Hope this helps you
Reply:another couple of weeks, you will awaake they'll be in bloom to cheer you up. use that miricle grow spray, its good.

When is the best time to start planting summer flowers in MI?

I live in southern Michigan, I live in Macomb township to be more specific and I was wondering when I should start planting perrenials like petunias.

When is the best time to start planting summer flowers in MI?
any time the danger of frost passes is the best time to start your planting
Reply:If they are protected somewhat, like against a building, you can give it a try now. Out in the open you may want to wait a couople of weeks. Rule of thumb is mid-May. The key is to be sure there will be no more frost - that will surely do them in!

Good luck!

Does anyone have advice on how to keep flowers in a flower box alive?

Hi! I have petunias, geraniums and sweet potatoe vines in a flower box right outside my window. It's in an area with heavy sunlight and a good amount of heat. I try to water them every day, but they always seem to dry out! Is there a trick to keeping them alive and well? Without overwatering?

Does anyone have advice on how to keep flowers in a flower box alive?
Proper drainage is important. If the soil is too dry, it could be that either there is too much drainage, wrong type of soil, or too much heat. Since we are in the middle of the summer months, my bet is that it may be a combination of all three reasons. Check the drainage holes. If the flower box is one that sits on a ledge, you may need to put a container underneath to prevent all the water from quickly running out. Second, check the soil. If the soil is not absorbing the water properly, it can also be adding to the problem. Invest in some new potting soil. You can tell fresh soil in the way it absorbs the liquid. It acts like a sponge. It may be because the old soil has lost its nutrients. Lastly, in the summer it is very important to water plants regularly and more frequently because heat will cause the water to evaporate faster.
Reply:Make sure you drill holes in the bottom for good drainage. I heard on TV to put the insides of a babys diaper in the bottom to help hold moisture. I have never tried it.
Reply:You can try putting a pan or something underneath the pot, then when you water them and the water runs out it will run out into this pan, when the soil starts to dry out it will start sucking the water up into the soil and keep them wetter.
Reply:Make certain that your flower box drains from the bottom. It should have a reservoir tray beneath, water it there if at all possible. This should also prevent over watering. Adding a TBSP sugar per qt of water also helps.

Good luck!
Reply:I have the same problem. I have more than one. I rotate from full sun to a place with partial sun for a day to two then back to the sun.
Reply:There are soil additives, gel looking stuff, that retains lotsa water without being too wet for the plants. Window boxex dry out quickly on a sunny day.
Reply:Spend the extra money to get a soil that will hold water better. Drying out is a big problem with flower boxes because they lose a lot of water to evaporation since it's suspended in the heat rather than the ground where the temp is more steady.

How can I get rid of these beetles that are eating my plants?

I have these beetles in my garden that are black in color with this soft rainbow colored shell on top that are eating my basil plants and petunias ect... They leave this skeleton effect on the leaves and I can't seem to get rid of them. There are a lot of them too. I don't want to kill my plants with sprays and I want to be able to eat my basil instead of the beetles eating it! Thanks for the help.

How can I get rid of these beetles that are eating my plants?
None of the above. What you have are June, or Japanese beetles that will lay eggs in the soil in the next few months and lay dormant as "C" shaped grubs that will ruin your lawn. When they turn to beetles in the summer, there will not be anything left intact in your garden!

Wal-mart sells some bug traps, for one or two bucks. You can get them anywhere at this time. They come in some green boxes, I think the brand is Ortho, but not sure. They work wonders. They are a plastic bag shaped like a funnel with a pheromone lure. The bugs go in, can't come out. Boy does it attract them!

Just make sure you set it in a downwind area of your property

What should I do about a baby bunny eating my flowers?

I have the tiniest baby bunny living in my front flower bed. It is eating my black eyed susans and petunias. What should I do about it? I'm not sure if it is normal for a baby bunny to be on its own already... maybe momma deserted it?!?

At any rate, it is cute as heck and I don't want it to starve but I would also like to preserve my landscaping. Can I feed it something else?

What should I do about a baby bunny eating my flowers?
Critter Ridder comes in a pump spray from Home depot, you'll probably only find it by asking an associate. At least, thats how I found it after looking on my own for more than an hour. It's expensive ...$17.00 for the bottle. Or you could put up a small chicken wire fence around the plants you want to keep. Also consider putting some other vegetable greens, or rabbit pellets (avalible anywhere pet supplies are sold) and water out for the cute little bunny, you can actually train him to come and eat what and where you want him to!
Reply:put moth balls around
Reply:Spray your plants with garlic/pepper tea :

To make garlic/pepper tea, liquefy 2 bulbs of garlic and 2 hot peppers in a blender 1/2 to 2/3 full of water. Strain the solids and add enough water to the garlic/pepper juice to make 1 gallon of concentrate. Use 1/4 cup of concentrate per gallon of spray. To make garlic tea, simply omit the pepper and add another bulb of garlic. Add two tablespoons of molasses for more control.

Don't worry about the rabbit - he'll find food elsewhere.
Reply:Capture baby bunny, take it to the vet, and keep it as a pet. That way you get your flowers, and she gets a safe momma who's going to love her.
Reply:Forget all the `cutesy wootsy` stuff, shoot it or your garden will live to regret it. Make that, will NOT live to regret it !
Reply:Quick, plant some lima beans! Seriously, I have the same problem, only the bunny is eating my lima bean plants just as they come out of the group, get some in the ground and as soon as they sprout I bet your bunny will go for them. Lettuce, cabbage and things like that might also help.

Good luck!
Reply:Rabbits are constant foragers, meaning that your plants are only a portion of it's diet. If you feed it something else, it will eat that AND your plants. Once a rabbit has found a food source, it will continue to eat that food source it's entire life. The only way to fix the problem is to trap it and relocate it to another area, or kill it. You don't seem to be a rabbit stew kind of girl, so I would suggest calling the city and ask them to bring a live trap by your house. Most citys will loan you a live trap at no charge. When they catch the rabbit, they will take it to a park and release it.
Reply:Kill it and make a stew.
Reply:Buy some toy plastic snakes. This will frighted the cute out of them. Just place them near the flowers.
Reply:You don't need to feed wildlife just because it's cute, rabbits can survive on their own. If the baby bunny is more than 5 inches long, it is old enough to care for itself. If you know where it lives, don't follow it as your scent trail will lead predators to it. Rabbits will eat clover, so if you want, you can have a contractor replace your yard with a clover field.
Reply:You should try to give it alternative food. Little bunnies often eat flowers because there is nothing else around. But, given the choice, they probably want to eat something else. So, you should go to the pet store and buy a variety of different rabbit foods and little bowls to put them in. Then, put to food right next to all your flowers. If the bunny still eats the flowers, then change to a different food until the bunny finds the one he or she likes. It is important to keep track of what food you put where. If this doesn't work, you may want to try carrots, celery or even bacon. But remember, you must present a well balanced meal - you are responsible for nutirition and if you give the rabbit a lot of junk food early on you could stunt its growth.

How do I get rid of earwigs in my potted plants outdoors?

My potted plants outside were pretty dry. When I poured water in them a bunch of earwig bugs ran out of them. Most of the plants are petunias. Is there anyway I can try to get rid of them, or should I just dispose the plants? Thanks very much for any suggestions.

How do I get rid of earwigs in my potted plants outdoors?
Hi,

Don't throw those petunias away-you can help control the earwig infestation in these ways:

Start with fresh potting mix in your containers each spring and keep the entire area clean of any debris where they can hide. Earwigs feed at night; they hide in crevices and cracks of patio furniture and decking as well as in soil during the day. Even the drain holes under your containers can become hiding spots.

Adults overwinter in your soil and emerge in spring when the female lays eggs just beneath the soil surface. She will stay right there until the eggs hatch, then tends her little pinchers until they can fend for themselves. She then leaves to lay more eggs while the first group starts eating your plants. What a system!

If you are fast enough to catch them of guard, they can be eliminated with insecticidal soap. Otherwise, try trapping by giving them a hiding spot you can destroy. Rolled up newspaper, a small tube or paper towel rolls, anything that can be picked up and discarded daily. They will stay inside these items, where if you use something that can be lifted off them, will make them scatter. Canned cat tuna makes a good bait.

Best wishes!

Insecticidal soap...

Available at any home and garden store.

Just be sure to rinse your veggies thoroughly before consuming...
Reply:Definitely Japanese Beetles. Setting out the traps helps, but also tends to attract all of the beetles in the neighborbood, so you actually end up with MORE beetles in your yard. Insecticidal soaps work, especially for plants you will eat. I use an insecticide called Sevin for ornamental plants. It comes in powder form or as a spray. Very effective - also controls fleas, spiders, etc.
Reply:If they are Japanese bettles, set some traps up wind from your plants. You can find them at most hardware stores.

What is the lowest temp. in ohio that it is safe for annuals to stay outside?

It is a mix of flowers. Some million bells, some petunias, and a few others like those.

What is the lowest temp. in ohio that it is safe for annuals to stay outside?
Hello, from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

55 degrees F, ambient air temperature.

50 degrees F, soil temperature.

When in doubt, after they're planted, cover even with newspaper to avoid cold temperatures.

Although they will survive some cold, it'll stunt growth %26amp; they'll delay growth, so protect the little beauties.
Reply:millionbells and petunias can both handle frost but not a hard freeze unless they have been out there a long time.

if they have been grown in a green house this spring you need to harden them off(protect from temperatures below 45 degrees)

what other plants do you have, i can help you figure out how much they can take.
Reply:Location is irrelevant as long as you plant them after any possibility of frost has past. Average time here in Indianapolis for the last frost is April 15th...
Reply:hmm, if things are going to be 40 and below, it would be safer to cover them

How do you store a tuberous begonia for winter?

Hello Y/A friends! I bought Non-stop orange tuberous begonias this past spring and I've heard you can store them for winter (In WI) and they will grow back next year. Can someone tell me how to do this correctly? Also looking for ideas in red, white and blue shade tolerant flowers for next spring. Would petunias do OK? They will get maybe 3-4 hours of sunlight daily. Thanks!

How do you store a tuberous begonia for winter?
To prepare the Begonia tubers for dormancy, gradually reduce watering and stop fertilizing at the end of August. Some gardeners may choose to remove any flower buds that form in September to encourage dormancy and the storing of energy in the tuber.

Dig Begonia tubers when the foliage starts to yellow, or after the first killing frost. Cut the stems to about five inches, and allow the tubers to cure (dry) indoors at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, until the remaining stem pieces are dry and loose or approximately 2 weeks. Pull off stems and any roots or soil, but don't wash the tubers.

Store the tubers in a perforated plastic bag, sack or box filled with peat moss or vermiculite in a cool, dark place. The ideal storage temperature range is 4°C (40°F) to 10°C (50°F).

Impatiens will give you red and white shade tolerant flowers. Purples are the cloeset you'll come to blue with Impateins. Cineraria (Senecio cruentus) will tolerate light shade and give you true blues. You can get blues in Lobelias as well.
Reply:Petunias need nearly full sun. Consider some of the lobelias, wax begonias, impatiens, nicotiana, Torenia fournieri, ageratum, Browallia, Coleus, Schizanthus, snaps, Cleome.

As for your nonstop, why not just pot it up and put it in a sunny windowsill this winter?
Reply:What zone are you?

No, petunias need full sun. I would go with impatiens because they are colorful and will do great with minimal sun. Astilbe are also a good choice for shade gardens. As for the begonias, if you live in the warm southern climates then you don't need to remove them and they will go dormant on their own, but make sure you stop watering in late October or early November. However, if you live in the colder northern climates then wait until your first light frost that damages the foliage. This will cause your begonias to go dormant. Dig up your begonia, dust off the soil and let it set out to dry for a few days. When it is dry enough then the branches should pop off easily. After they are dry then place each individual tuber in its own paper bag and place in a box. Remember to check them for rot throughout dormancy.

Good Luck

Next year, how long would it take for annuals that are 4 inches tall, to grow very wide, and largE?

I bought this little booklet about Annuals, and there is a colored flower bed with all annuals, like zinnia, begonia, sage, impatients, petunias, periwinkle, and african marigold. On the cover, the bed is very full, with no space in beween the flowers. It shows a step by step instructions on the side of the page on how to make it look exacly like the picture., and your supposed to plant the plants about 5 inches apart, and the flowers are still small when they are planted. How long would it take for them to be about a foot wide, and tall? When would I have to plant them next year? All the flowers in the pictures look very full. thanks.

Next year, how long would it take for annuals that are 4 inches tall, to grow very wide, and largE?
How long it takes for them to get bigger depends on the plant and growing conditions (weather, soil, season, etc). You would have to plant them after the fear of frost is gone, and they should continue to grow (size %26amp; height) until the cold weather comes in.

Annuals do not return year after year, so each spring you would need to go out and replant everything. If you are putting in a bed for the flowers I would suggest going with Perenials. Each year they will return and be larger until the reach their maximum size. You can add the annuals each spring to give you more color and blooms through out the seasons.
Reply:your looking at the very least 2 months.possibly all summer.it depends on the soil the light they get.and the fertilizer you use.you can get seeds from annuals when you deadhead the flower.make sure they are completely dry before storing them.then start them indoors,or wait untill the last frost to plant your seeds.

What is a good homemade recipe, that is safe to use around animals, for spraying flowering plants with?

I have Petunias, Impatients, Celosia, Salvia, Bluebonnets and other pretty plants that I need to spray it on. I need something that works on caterpillars, cutworms and red spider mites.

What is a good homemade recipe, that is safe to use around animals, for spraying flowering plants with?
Try a strong solution of soap in water.
Reply:dish soap mixed with water...works pretty well
Reply:I have an organic vegetable garden and two flower beds and I am a huge fan of Neem Oil, which I bought at a health food store. Directions are on the package, I mix about a quart at a time and mix 1 tsp of neem oil, 1/2 tsp of liquid biodegradable dish detergent (also from the health food store) and a quart of water. Shake well and use immediately.

Spray on plants (flowers and leaves) and use as a soil drench. Not only does it act as an insecticide but it acts as a fungicide and miticide as well. It doesn't harm benefical bees or insects, it is safe around birds and other animals and doesn't pollute water sources. Make sure you get both the tops and undersides of the leaves and use every 5-7 days. One 16 oz bottle of Neem Oil makes 48 gallons of spray.

It makes my plants look AMAZING and they are bug and fungus free. It smells a little funny but not like a commercial insecticide would (Eeew!).
Reply:hot pepper juice. we sell hot pepper wax, so it's basically the same thing.
Reply:Don't know any homemade recipies, but if you go to Lowes or Home depot, or your local hardware/lumber place, they have stuff there for those plants/pests that is completely safe for people and pets. That is probably the safest route to take.
Reply:okay here goes one equal parts liquid dish soap and listerine . the bugs hate it and the plants love it .
Reply:jenny is right - NEEEEEEMMM!

Organic is the best.

Also, hand picking and spraying with water works well, if you can stomach touching the squishies. If spraying with water, do it gently, hold the affected part of the plant and use just enough pressure to blow the pest away.

For cutworms, place toothpicks close the base of the stem, carefully so you don't poke the plant.

Insecticidal soap (as mentioned by others) works as well, but it may need to be rinsed off the next morning. it can mar the leaves if the plant is in full sun.

Maybe they'd get their human friend to type their answers for them here on Y!A. I don't know, really. Or maybe the flower would communicate with a human with his or her mind and the human would then translate the flower's thoughts onto Y!A.

I have a ruelia plant should I cut it back ?

It has become spindly and falls over. Another name for Ruelia is false petunia, has purple flowers and is about three feet tall, is bushing out also.

I have a ruelia plant should I cut it back ?
it won't hurt it to cut it back. is it getting too much shade, or too much water?
Reply:it depends how much that ruelia needs trimming some say

a little bit on top then even it out on both sides like a bush yes must be done correctly as should http://www.howtotrimanruelia.com !
Reply:i have these growing near my water garden in several places.they can be very evasive,so i usually thin them out every few months.but depending on where you live, you may just want to trim them as they fall to keep them looking good.i live on the coast in south texas,so we have nearly year round growing season.

I have some wave petunias & million bells that started drooping but the soil is wet-could they be overwatered?

We had a torrential downpour earlier this week. I skipped watering for a day but then began again. The plants are yellowing %26amp; drooping. Is it possible to overwater %26amp; if so, how do I make this right?

I have some wave petunias %26amp; million bells that started drooping but the soil is wet-could they be overwatered?
Petunias like you describe probably are too wet. Usually, when you see chlorotic foliage, the plants need to dry a bit and to be fed. Next time they're dry enough to water, hit them with a shot of Miracle Gro or Peter's, or your favorite flowering plant fertilizer.
Reply:Sounds like they were overwatered. Do your containers have good drainage? If not, sorry, it could be too late. They are heavy feeders but drainage is essential; roots need air too.
Reply:let it go for a few days without watering.. they will right themselves

Is aunt petunia a scuibb???

i took a harry potter charcter quiz and one of the pictures was of aunt petunia and above it, it said "She is a Scuibb"?? i thought to be a scuibb u had to come from a magical family and have no magical powers!!! but i dont know!!! plz tell me!!

Is aunt petunia a scuibb???
No. Her sister, Lily Potter, was born a mudblood. To be a squib, you have to have no powers and come from two magical parents.
Reply:Petunia wasn't born into a magical family; Lily was Muggle-born.

Also, it's spelled "Squib."

Can someonee please help me with my petunias?

They are in a hanging pot and most have all died off.....I give them plenty to drink and sun..but are they getting too much sun? I thought these were full sun to partial shade flowers? Would miracle grow help? I want to make them thrive again (like there were just a few days ago.) I already trimmed the dead ones off...

Can someonee please help me with my petunias?
Most flowers you buy prepotted are usually nearly root bound when you buy them. So you need to buy another hanging pot %26amp; some potting soil %26amp; separate the plant in half, one in each pot and add the potting soil. Be sure to place some gravel in the bottom for drainage. Good as new %26amp; now you have 2!
Reply:They might not come back until you repot them as they need more dirt to expand in to survive. Without more dirt, they are choking themselves out. Report It

Reply:Make sure you pick off the seed pods after they flower, otherwise they go to all seeds and you won't have anymore flowers. Don't overwater, a little fertilizer will help, they will start back up if you have trimmed them back. Have you tried the "wave" petunias? They just keep going all summer long, I love them, they don't seem to need as much care.
Reply:Petunias are prone to this. Since you have already trimmed them back all you need is fertilizer and love. If the leaves have a yellowed look then you are over watering.
Reply:petunias will take a lot of sun and only partial shade (they will not bloom well if full shade) fertilize about every two weeks with Miracle Grow or similar product. You have to remember that your petunia just came from a perfect environment and will have a little stress, also the petunia blooms do die off and you have to pull of the dead and or shriveled ones to promote more blooming, make sure to water regularly, they are pretty versatile
Reply:Are they getting too much water? They like to dry out in between waterings. And miracle once every two weeks will keep them healthy(just not too much again). If you take them back to the nursery, they should be able to tell whats wrong just by looking at the plants. Good luck!!!! :)
Reply:You need to make sure they're in the right kind of soil. Since they're in pots, the best thing to use which is absolutely loaded with nutrients fior your plants is called worm castings, or vermicast. This stuff goes through a process which ensures that it will be so saturated with nutrients, your plants are almost sure to thrive. If you can't track it down (since it's sometimes hard to find) use GOOD QUALITY potting soil. It too is also loaded with nutrients on which your plants can thrive. Both time-release water and nutrients to your plants to make sure they're getting what they need when they need it. You can look online at www.1800TOPSOIL.com or call 1-800-TOPSOIL to see if they have a member servicing your area. They're national and very reputable. Good luck.
Reply:Give them little water in the mornings take out of the sun they dry out to fast, and dont forget to dehead them when the flower is spent. Hope this helps
Reply:When feeding, add equal parts of epsoms salts (1 tablespoon food and salts per gallon of water once every 2 weeks). That helps the plant stay green and healthy. I also have hanging baskets full of petunias. I deadhead (pick off spent blooms) every day, and I water every day as hanging baskets dry out much faster than regular containers.

Do you think petunia dursley, sister of lily potter, aunt of harry is really a witch?

I don't know but she knows things like dementors and azkaban. That's supposed to be top-secret only for wizards.

Do you think petunia dursley, sister of lily potter, aunt of harry is really a witch?
omg that would be incredibly...ummm...idk. something. i'd thought of that but i wasnt sure if i was just being ridiculous. that would sorta make sense i guess. maybe there's a little magic in her. but she's so anti-magic...well watever. we'll find out soon enough. trust jk rowling to come up with a twist like that.
Reply:Makes sense.

THey might say more about it in the 7th book!
Reply:well, her sister was a witch! if my sister went to another world for school, she'd spill a few things about it, too. petunia's like anti-witch
Reply:NNNNOOO!!! THE ONLY REASON PETUNIA KNOWS ABOUT AZKABAN IS BECAUSE SHE HEARD JAMES TELL LILLY ABOUT THEM!!! IMAGINE HOW MUCH WORSE HARRY'S CHILDHOOD WOULD HAVE BEEN! ALSO,IF PETUNIA WERE A WITCH,THEN WOULDN'T DUDLY GO TO HOGWARTS?????!!!!?????
Reply:she is just a iealous old bitty that can not except she isnot good enough
Reply:No, JK Rowling has said that Petunia is not a witch/wizard.

In the third book Petunia says that she heard 'her talking to that awful boy', something like that, about dementors and azkaban.

That was James (or maybe Snape?) telling Lily about the wizard prison and the guards.

This happened after the attack on Harry and Dudley. Petunia was speaking to Vernon, and I know that it was about Lily and James (or Snape) because Harry said that she (Petunia) should just use their (Lily and James'-or maybe Snape's and Harry doesn't know it-) names.
Reply:Maybe. Wow, i never thought of that... maybe lily potter told her about all that stuff, or someone else told her... i cant wait till the seventh book.... :)
Reply:No, other wise she would not have a problem sending Harry of to Hogworts. She cleary did not want him to go and called her sister and james "freaks" I don't think she is a witch.
Reply:No she is not a witch. Her sister was. If you go to JK Rowlings site, theres a section that says rumors (or maybe its the FAQ section) and this question is asked. JK Rowling, herself, statest hat Aunt Petunia is NOT a witch.

What are some good perennials I can plant if my home faces East?

I typically just place some planter of petunias and geraniums....but I'm also looking for some suggestions of plants/flowers that will thrive in the location I need them to be in. I have a townhouse which faces East. I do water my plants in Summer daily. What other plants/flowers will thrive in this location? I've tried petunias, but they tend to dry up and wilt in my sunny locale. Thanks!

Who sang this song? "Petunia Fair"?

Who sang the alternative rock song "Petunia Fair"?

Who sang this song? "Petunia Fair"?
I think is Richard Rielli and The Reactions. But it was a live song therefore not considered part of The "Reactions" canon. In fact some fans have never forgiven the normally ambient-reliant Rielli for this venture into bubble gum alternative rock, and bass player Margo Fade left the band as a result. But, ironically, "Petunia Fair" is the only radio hit that the Reactions can claim.

Impatiens

Sweet Potato Vine (BLACKIE), (Marguerite)

Dusty Miller

Marigold

Pepper Golden Summer

Petunia (Blue Spread), ( Red Spread)

Tomato Beefmaster

Double Impatiens- white,red,rose on white

I need information on the following plants,?
I can can help with a couple

The pepper needs about 2ft dia growing space

The beefmaster needs about 3 ft dia growing space

I ain't a pansy man so I can't help with the rest
Reply:Impatients (my personal favorite-year 'round):

pots-3 or 4 inches apart (I put 3 in a regular size hanging basket, for instance).

ground-6 inches apart (ya don't have to be exact)

Sweet Papas (great choice):

pots-1 per bigger pot.

ground- 1 per side of porch (for instance). Potatoes will grow deeper than wide but, vine will be 20/30 feet.

Marigold- they don't like pots here. Ground-10 inches apart.

Peppers:

pots-1 per pot. You can plant a few petunias or impatients around the left over space if ya want. Choose a color that will accent the pepper plant.

ground- 20 inches (there abouts).

petunia same as impatients

tomato:

pot-1 in 5 gallon bucket or same size (deep), cage and stake when you plant.

ground- 30 inches, cage and stake, too.

double impatients more delicate than regular, same instructions.

Water everything thoroughly every time they get dryish or if you see them wilting, just give them a little drink and you can practically watch them perk back up.

Use SuperThrive 1/4 tsp per gallon water when you plant and every 6 months. You can use miracle grow every week or when ya feel like it.

All impatients prefer shade and don't mind a little sun. They don't like hot and will die when it gets hot (June, July)

sweet potato Full Sun but, they might grow into the shade when they are climbing so that's ok.

marigolds, peppers, tomato-Full Sun.

petunias like full sun AND like sun with shaddy part time.

All these flower types you have chosen come in lots of colors. It's hard to choose...I like to by 6 paks of these particular bedding plants and if ya wanna try seeds, pick up some zennias. Zennias go perfect with this combination you have chosen.

P.S. Don't forget to put wholes in the buckets for drainage. I know they are ugly but, tomatoes love them. You can paint them.

How fast do "Wave Petunias" spread?

I have seen Wave Petunias in the stores, and am wondering.. How fast do they spread? And, how much do they spread?

How fast do "Wave Petunias" spread?
It depends on how and where you plant them. I planted some in hanging baskets 4 plants to a basket and they filled the baskets in just a few weeks. Better yet, they even came back this year. The ones I planted in the ground spread pretty fast, too, but it seemed to take more of them than I anticipated to fill the bedding space. They, too, came back again this year and I just bought a few more to fill in the open spaces. I'm in zone 9 and they do require more watering than other plants, but I only fertilized them once when I planted them. I found a good estimate is to anticipate that they increase 3 fold from the size you plant.
Reply:they were the first plant that i had ever planted that did really good. They grow pretty fast and pretty easily too. i put 3 small plants in each medium sized hanging basket and they filled in nicely by mid summer. good luck.

What can be used to keep muscovy ducks from eating low growing flowers like petunias?

i'ave been feeding cracked corn to muscovy ducks, mothers and babies. they got in my flower bed and ate a white $10 petunia. what can i do or use to discourage them.

What can be used to keep muscovy ducks from eating low growing flowers like petunias?
I raise muscovies, and they Love flowers and vegies. Darned birds. But, spraying the flowers with a mix of dish soap in water will make the flowers unpalatable, and it actually kills many pest insects.

Feeding corn to muscovies isn't a great idea. If these are Your ducks, and not wild, invest in some game bird feed. With the price of feed corn skyrocketing, it doesn't cost much more than the corn, and it's WAY better for them. Even scratch grain is better than corn for a muscovy.

Put tomato fence around precious flowers (those wire cones that you get at the garden center) and spray with dish soap in water.

Best of luck.
Reply:Fence in the flowers so the ducks can't get to them. Some kind of physical barrier would work best.

How to get rid of catapillars on petunias?

catapillars are eating the flowers my petunias. Either home remedy or strore product

How to get rid of catapillars on petunias?
You are probably talking about bud worms. These are the larvae of moths that look like white butterflies. They are devastating to petunias because they eat all the buds and you can't get any flowers. The Seven spray (carbaryl) will probably work or you can use a product called "Caterpiller Killer" from Safer. It contains a bacillus culture that invades the system of 'pillers and worms and kills them like a bad virus. It is host specific, which means it is only deadly to caterpillers and plant eating worms and won't hurt you or your pets. It won't kill other beneficial insects either but if you spray it all over your yard it will kill any other caterpillers. Even the ones that may be the larvae of beautiful butterflies. Apply it only to the petunias, okay?
Reply:Try Sevin dust. You can also look at a granular insecticide at a local garden center.
Reply:are you sure these are caterpillars?

I doubt it.

Go to Wal Mart and get some spray for flowers in the garden dept.

WHere to go to ask JK Rowling a question?

I have a question that I am dying to get answered, and I feel JK is the only person who is able to answer it . Do any of you know where I can go to get my question answered by her, or how?

For those who want to know my question, here it is-

In the Order of the Phoenix (I think), Dumbledore sent Aunt Petunia a howler saying "Remember" (or something like that). I was wondering what "Remember meant".

WHere to go to ask JK Rowling a question?
He sent her an Owler that said "Remeber my last." Albus was referring to the request he made of her when he left Harry and a letter on the Dursley's doorstep. In the letter, he asked her to accept Harry into their home and care for him as if he was their own son. In the fifth book, Vernon wants to kick out Harry because he thinks that he harmed Dudley but Petunia doesn't let him because that would be going against Albus's last request.

As for contacting Jo, I like to consider it impossible. =)
Reply:good question...i was wondering the same thing. try sending her fan mail, i heard in a interview that she answers every question about her books. i can't promise that you will get it back that month or anything.
Reply:The howler says, "Petunia, remember my last" and refers to the letter that Dumbledore left with Harry on the Dursley's doorstep explaining the enchantment that protected Harry's life as long as he could call her sister's house home. If the Dursley's kicked Harry out he would lose the protection of his mother's blood and Voldemort and the Deatheaters would be able to get him.
Reply:I know! I have been dying to know ...

How do I keep bunny rabbits and squirrels out of my flower garden? They are digging holes and eating flowers.?

I have gerber daisies, caladium's, petunia's, geraniums, rose bushes and begonias.

How do I keep bunny rabbits and squirrels out of my flower garden? They are digging holes and eating flowers.?
Put up a fence around them. You can also make little "cages" out of chicken wire and put your bulbs into them before you plant them. The flowers grow right through them, but the animals can't eat them.

There is some kind of animal repellent you can sprinkle around the garden, but you would have to keep sprinkling it after it rains. I think you can stuff like that at any well-stocked nursery. Then there are things like motion-activated sprinklers you could set up too. Or put up a fake owl around your garden somewhere and the rodents should be scared off by it, you would have to move it from time to time so they don't realize that it's fake. You can find stuff like this at stores or on amazon.com
Reply:Put blood meal (found at nursery or home improvement store), it's not as gross as it sounds, it is just powder. Put a good amout round the base of the plants, but do not mix it in. For some reason the animals don't like it. You might have to replace it every so often if you notice them coming back.
Reply:Plant marigold's aroung them--like a little tiny orange wall. Bunnies don't like them.

What are your predictions for the HP & Deathly Hallows ?

I think Snape is on the good side %26amp; that Aunt Petunia is secretly a witch who never actually learned magic like her sister.

What are some of your theories? :]

♥ Clare.

What are your predictions for the HP %26amp; Deathly Hallows ?
Here's what I think may happen:

-Harry is not a Horcrux, but he will die to save the entire world (not just the Wizarding world)

-R.A.B. is Regulus Black and he used Kreacher to help him steal the locket.

-I believe that Dumbledore's assumptions about the Horcruxes are correct and I think that the unknown Horcrux is Ravenclaw's wand.

-Neville will severly injure Bellatrix Lestrange and she'll die from her wounds.

-Remus and Bill will come together to kill Greyback.

-Bill and Fleur's wedding will be a joyous occassion.

-There will be an invasion at the Ministry of Magic. Many Ministry employees will die or be put under the Imperious Curse.

-Dumbledore is dead, but we will see him again in some way, shape, or form.

-Sirius is dead, but we will see him again in some way, shape, or form.

-Harry will use the Draught of Living Death to go beyond the veil to talk to Dumbledore and/or Sirius and/or his parents. It is said the the veil between the living and dead worlds is thinner on Halloween and that's when I think he will use the potion.

-Petunia will reveal what she knows about the Wizarding world and Harry's parents, but he'll get a lot more information about his parents (specifically Lily) from Remus.

-Severus Snape will be very important and I think that, no matter how cruel of a person he is, he is good.

-Peter will fulfill his life debt to Harry.

I've answered questions like this so many times that I decided to put my theories in a word document. LOL. It works quite well!
Reply:well i also believe snape is on the good side but i dont think petunia is a witch but then again i dont have any theroys on her...... I think harry will die as he will kill voldemort.... I also think neville and hagrid will die...... I also hope Tonks and Lupin gets married.... I have tons more but ill never have enough room to type them alll.....=]]]]
Reply:I have heard, and believe, that killing Voldimort strips him of his powers and he must return to being a muggle.

I do think that some other major characters will die however.

P.S. - What's with the "thumbs down" people! A theories are, just that, theory! We're not talkin evolution here!
Reply:This is straight from JK, "Will Aunt Petunia will start exhibiting magical tendencies?

No, she won't. Aunt Petunia has never performed magic, nor will she ever be able to do so."

I trust Dumbledore, so I trust Snape.
Reply:I think that harry is the last horcrux and he'll have to sacrifice himself to rid the world of voldemort. Malfoy either goes all bad, or reverts to goodness. Dumbledore still makes his appearance as a ghost or apparition of some kind. All Harry's dead loved ones appear at his direst moment to lend him their powerz...

Reply:Some stay as small as 3.5 feet, but most get 4-6 feet. All the corns I've met have been at least 4 feet. If you met your corn's parents, then you'll have a good size estimate. But if you didn't, then I'd say 5 feet is a good average.
Reply:Mine is only about 2 1/2 feet long, but some do get around 6 feet.
Reply:corn snakes will usually get between four to six feet depending on the species
Reply:A corn snake can get up to 3-5 feet in length. I know cause i catch many snakes. Even though i am 13 and a girl.

Reply:I've had my snake for about a year and a half, and she's close to 4 feet now, but it's pretty common for them to grow to 6 feet.

I want to buy some petunia plugs but cant seem to find any sold in th US just the UK please help?

if your looking for plugs that are like an inch in diameter... you will have to find a greenhouse that carries them... garden centers don't fool with them cuz they dry out too quick... and not very profitable... if your looking for the 6 packs or 36 to a flat (called 6-0-6's in the hort world) you can find those at the garden centers...

I want to buy some petunia plugs but cant seem to find any sold in th US just the UK please help?
They're sold as seeds or in trays. Try HomeDepot, Lowes, or a local nursery.
Reply:They're called "cells" in my area. You can find them in local greenhouses, garden centers and even some grocery stores.

My petunias have little white spots?

My pertunias have little white spots on the flowers - that just came up over night and look like paint splatters almost. The rest of the plant seems to be fine - anyone have any clues what the crap this is on my flowers and how to get rid of it?

My petunias have little white spots?
Take a closer look, use a magnifying glass. They could be mealy bugs. If they are mealy bugs you can rinse them off with a water stream.

If the white spots are not little white bugs your plants may have to much or to little fertilizer.

Good luck with your petunias!
Reply:I'd guess you have aphids. Blast them off your plants with a hard stream of water or spray ther leaves with a solution of 10% Ivory liquid %26amp; 90% water.
Reply:If it can be rubbed off, it might be bird droppings.

Or it might be powdery mildew.

Or it might be tiny insects.

There are sprays for the last two. Check at your garden center, nursery, hardware stores.

What do you think happened to the Dursley's in Harry Potter?

I think that ernon and Petunia finaly accepted him, but only because dudley did,

i also think that harry sometimes visits dudly.

what do you think?

What do you think happened to the Dursley's in Harry Potter?
lived happily ever after
Reply:happly ever after
Reply:I think that Dudley grew up to be a Muggle like his father, though he accepts Harry for saving him. I think that he will live next to the Dursleys and marry someone just like Petunia. And that they have children, get postcards with owls every now and then, but aren't that close. I think it's a separate world, and even though they accepted the help, Vernon and Petunia will never accept Harry for who he is. And he's better off without them.
Reply:I believe that Harry, although shocked by Dudleys actions in Book 7 realized that He did care. Vernon and Petunia will accept Harrys presence if Dudley did. I can not see Harry spending loads of time with them but I can see him and Dudley coming to understand normal sibling issues and becoming friends.
Reply:I don't think that Harry really wants anything to do with them after all those years. They probably went their seperate ways. It would be very interesting to find out though =)
Reply:I think they parted ways.Vernon and Petunia were not ever going to be accepting of Harry because of what he was. Harry would never forgive them for the way he was raised. He helped them out of kindness and then that was that .
Reply:Shortly after he offed Voldemort, Harry waited until the dead of night, snuck into the Dursley's old house (a little alohomora action), killed Vernon and Petunia via the Avada Kedavra (looks wierd without the italics), cast Muffliato on Dudley's room, and proceeded to torture him until he ended up just like the Longbottoms. And then Harry used the imperious curse on him and made him drive a car off a cliff. Then, before going home to the burrow, young Potter modified the memories of the next door neighbors so that no one remembered that the Dursley's existed.

This is directly from J.K. Rowlings. I promise.
Reply:hey you look like me! I am guessing you have read the seventh book I have aswell but I never thought of the dursleys.I think that maybe he never saw them again and lived at the burrow for a while because at the start of the book the dursleys were evacuated and I don't think harry knew the whereabouts
Reply:I think Hermione found them, put a spell on them like she did her parents, and they are happily living different lives under different names in Australia.
Reply:Much as I'd love to believe your version I think its more likely that their paths never crossed Harry's again. I can't see Vernon ever having accepted Harry and after Harry's childhood I doubt Harry could ever forgive them enough to want to have anything to do with them as an adult.

I feel he'd probably almost be able to split his life into three as an adult, his life as a kid with them, his life between learning he was a Wizard and the end of Voldemort and finally his life after it when he was finally allowed to live normally. Because of this I doubt he'd want to see much of the Dursleys as they'd always remind him of when he was a kid.

I also doubt that Vernon'd ever overcome his hatred/fear of magic enough to accept or like Harry much but that Petunia could possibly manage to treat Harry as she would a stranger (which would be an improvement) because of Dudley but her deep jealousy of those with magical talent would probably prevent her ever fully accepting Harry.

Dudley and Harry may possibly speak as adults, but again I think not.

I think it'd probably end up with all the Dursley's just trying to act as if the magical community didn't exist and they had no links to it in the end, same as they did until Harry turned eleven.
Reply:i would really like to think that they are still in contact. they were extremely hard on Harry growing up but now that Harry is all grown up i think that he could look back on it and try to understand how they felt. magic is something we know is not real but it have it in your house its a very intimidating thing. they were very afraid of him. i wish JK Rowling would have said something about that in a different interview. they truly had to love him deep down. you would have to be a monster to feel no attachment or remorse for him. but was it ever answered who sent that howler to Petunia that said something like "remember my last"? i don't remember
Reply:I think that while they will never be one big happy family the Dursleys may have made peace with Harry %26amp; he with them. At least enough to exchange Christmas cards. Petunia was jealous of Lilly's magic growing up but she did love her sister and probably wouldnt want the last connection completely gone, even if she doesnt particularly want him over for dinner.

The howler was sent by Dumbledore to remind her of the promise she made to keep Harry safe.
Reply:I don't think Vernon and Petunia ever accepted Harry despite the fact that Dudley did. As Harry said, the Dursley's were being offered some of the best possible protection, so it seems likely they would have learned of Voldemort's defeat at Harry's hands. At which time I think Dudley would have started terrifying his parents a little by wanting to find Harry. Vernon probably got another job selling drills (or maybe he got his old job back as the Order used a little magic to make his bosses think hae hadn't been gone for a year), but I think he and Petunia were so anti-magic that they would never accept Harry.
Reply:I have no clue, i would imigine they lived happily ever after

What kind of perennial plant is this?

I have two plants on the side of my house that bloom In july -aug.they are about 3 ft. tall look like a shrub with soft petunia or morning glory looking flowers -Lt. pink on one plant and white on the other. They are closed in the evening and early morning and open during the day. I looked at some pictures of bush morning glories, but they dont resemble mine, actually the flowers do but not the shrub itself. Mine are very tidy looking like they never need to be pruned or anything. Oh and they are about 2or 3 ft. across. Please help me identify these. thanks

What kind of perennial plant is this?
could be FOUR- OCLOCK'S
Reply:what you are describing sounds like either rhododendrons or azaleas. different types can grow anywhere from 6" - 8' tall and 6" - 6' wide. they come in a variety of colors and bloom between early spring and late fall depending on type and growing zone. maybe this will help...maye not. worth a shot though.
Reply:I would guess maybe rhododendrons
Reply:Campanula maybe, or a hybrid form of Morning Glory? Just guessing. Should have put a picture on I could have looked it up in my encyclopedia of perennial plants. Hope someone else can help more.
Reply:Could it be hibiscus or rose of sharon?

What's the best home remedy for aphids on petunias?

A 1tsp of dish soap in a spray bottle of water.

What's the best home remedy for aphids on petunias?
I tried the baby powder, waiting to see what happens. Thanks for all the answers. I like the dish soap one too, I have done that before. Report It

Reply:try a dusting of baby powder...........it works
Reply:seven dust or spray
Reply:gather up some lady bugs they eat them! I no it sounds weird but every time you find some lady bugs gather them up B-4 they end up dieing in your window seel. ITS TRUE!
Reply:Knock them off with a strong spray of water %26amp; use Ivory dish soap spray . The recommended dilution rate is 1 oz. Ivory Liquid to 1 gallon of water.

OR

1Tablsp vegetable oil and 1 Tablsp. Ivory dish soap to a gallon of water. Upon coming into contact with an insect the oil will coat and smother the insect. Use this method when it's cooler as it may burn when it's hot out. I spray my roses early in the morning.

A solution from http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/tips/... Blend together 1 garlic bulb, 1 small onion, 1 t cayenne pepper, 1 quart water. Steep one hour and add 1 T liquid hand soap

Plant repellent plants like allium (chives, garlic, onions) as companion plants surrounding or bordering the plants which are susceptible to aphids.

A spray can also be made from Seaweed, which will repel both red spider mites and aphids. It will nourish your plants, too.

How long do Petunias typically last (I'm in the Northeast)?

And are there any tips to make them last longer? They're so pretty, but when they are gone, they are GONE....

How long do Petunias typically last (I'm in the Northeast)?
Petunias are heave feeders, so follow The instructions on your fertilizer carefully but try to feed them once a week.

Keep them deadheaded, and watch out for aphids, because they will suck the like out fo them.

I personally do more than just dead head, I cut every other branch back an inch at least. As they regrow then I cut back the other long branches.
Reply:When a flower starts to die off, pull it off, as with all flowering plants it's only purpose in life is to reproduce, if you keep dead heading it will encourage the plant to produce more flowers in the hope of reproducing, therefore resulting in a longer flowering period.
Reply:I havnt had any last more than a few months..they dont come back year after year. You could keep replanting them over and over.
Reply:After the flower dies pick it off. That way the plant does not try to keep feeding it and puts more energy into new blooms. I love petunias and they should last all summer. I have alot of them in pots and they will come up the next year but I live in OK and we don't have alot of cold weather here.

Harry potter and the deathly hallows question (petunia)?

j.k rowling said theres more to petunia then meets the eye, what was so special about petunia? all i can think of is when lily was arguing with petunia and she said that petunia wrote a letter to dumbledore asking if she could attend the school, it seems as though there was going to be something or more significance so what else?

Harry potter and the deathly hallows question (petunia)?
I think what this refers to is the fact that at one time Petunia wanted to be like Lily and even went so far as to ask Dumbledore to accept her into the school. When she was rejected, she naturally upset, but instead of accepting that, she tried to hide her true passion of becoming a witch by replacing it with a hatred for what she can never become.
Reply:i agree that the significance wasn't huge. i think what exactly jkr meant was the fact that putunia actually wanted to go from the start i actually felt quite sorry for her which kinda freaked me out
Reply:Felt like something got left there, didn't it? Warning, SPOILERS if you haven't read the book!

My best guess is that either Petunia was a squib (this seems likely) or she had no gifts whatsoever, but was jealous of Severus and Lily's powers.

How much to charge as a Nanny?

Help! I planted a row of petunias in my lawn and I heard they die after a season?

Is this true? I planted them with the thought that they will last for years, but they're annual, so I guess they die after a year and I have to buy new ones and replant them? They don't drop seeds and regerminate or what? Thanks in advance.

Help! I planted a row of petunias in my lawn and I heard they die after a season?
They are annuals, and they will die out once the cold weather hits and not come back next season. You don't say where you live, but in extremely warm winter areas(Florida, parts of southern TX and CA) they may come back, just don't count on it. Try daylilies - they are pretty flowers and continue to grow and spread from year to year.
Reply:We treat them as annuals.

They will drop seeds, but most of the time the resulting plants are not true to color or form of the desired parent plant. In fact after several seasons, if the seeds overwinter, they will revert to the more natural white and lavenders.

I have grown a petunia inside during the winter, near a sunny window.

I have seen volunteer petunias grow on landscape rock, at the edge of a building and parking lot, in the cracks of a sidewalk, etc.

Don't be afraid to replant your petunias (or other annuals) each year. They are pretty inexpensive and give you loads of color and enjoyment during the growing season. Remember to pick off the dead blooms (nip off the seed heads before they takes hold) and you will have loads of blooming petunias this summer and into the fall.
Reply:This is interesting because a funny thing happened to me this spring. Last year I had petunias in pots along the patio. The rabbits eventually ate all of them. My contribution to the animal kingdom. This spring, all along the patio, I have a mass of petunias. They are even in one of the pots that didn't have petunias last year; but not growing in the pots that did have petunias. This is interesting, because I live in Iowa and we had a few nights of well below 0 weather. So, they don't usually come back the next year, but I guess you never know.
Reply:Petunias are annuals for the most part, but sometimes they have seeds and they will germinate the following year, but certainly not the way each plant will when planted after buying them from a local nursery.
Reply:Sometimes they'll seed themselves.

Here's a tip...look up what you want to plant before you actually do.

Pansies are more likely to reseed themselves.
Reply:Petunias are an annual in most climate zones in the U.S. They are one of the more hardier annuals, meaning they can tolerate a light frost, but if the temperature gets below 29 F or so, they will die. You can start petunias from seeds, but I have never seen them reseed themselves the following spring. They are such a consistent performer and are generally take a little more neglect than most annuals. That being said, water them when the soil feels dry and fertilize them regularly to get best results.

Good luck and enjoy your flowers!

Do petunias come back every year?

i need to know i have like 13 of them.small ones.that have just come up.thanks for your awnsers.i appreciate it.

Do petunias come back every year?
No, unfortunatly they do not, they are an annual which means they grow for one year.

I have transplanted some into pots and brought them in the house before the frost hits and they do ok, but you still have time for the small ones to grow.

They produce seeds if you take some of them and put them in brown paper bags then next spring you can sprinkle around and grow them again.
Reply:I live where there are mild winters,so I just leave the seeds where they fall and come spring, I have petunias. But no,petunias do not come back every year. Good luck with your garden.
Reply:They're "annuals", so they're not supposed to. Some of mine still come back every year though. Go figure.
Reply:Hi -

Most of the people had the answer right. Petunias are annual flowers and die out after one year. They are annuals in warm and cold climates. Look at my annual gallery page for a picture and brief description of petunias. Hope this helps and good luck with the flowers.

Reply:no
Reply:The original petunia plant will not return. It will, however, drop seeds that, if you are fortunate, will sprout next spring. I've tried collecting petunia seeds and planting the seeds, but I've found just letting the plant drop seeds and sow itself at random is more effective.

A note: some petunia plants are "sterile", which I understand is done to increase the number and size of flowers the plant produces. These plants will not provide seeds.
Reply:Im leaning toward no, at least in my area they are an annual - I see someone else included a link - and said yes - so maybe in some zones they are hardy.

Aunt Petunia is a Death Eater and Dudley is a closet wizard.?

actually no, Petunia isn't a Death Eater. Voldy has only one or two death eater women. The rest are men. Also, Petunia wears dresses all the time, so Harry could have seen the Death Eater mark on her arm.

About Dudley, He might be. Why do the Dursleys try and keep him happy 24/7?

Aunt Petunia is a Death Eater and Dudley is a closet wizard.?
That is one of the most ridiculous theories yet!
Reply:no, no, no, no,what are you thinking they both are muggles.where did you read this may I ask you?
Reply:NOOOOOO

lol thats the worst theory yet.

they both h8 magic.
Reply:no way.... not close at all.... aunt petunia doesn't do any magic.... it was confirmed by JKR.
Reply:o very funny
Reply:Oh wow, that is the worst prediction I have ever read...wow, thats horrible, I'm sorry but it is.

What are some instances (in the Harry Potter books) of Dudley being spoiled, mean, or manipulative?

Including details, like page #, book, and what the instance was would be very helpful. Also, if you know of any instances of Petunia looking past Dudley' s misbehavios as if it werent happening (specific instances) that would be great. Thanks!

What are some instances (in the Harry Potter books) of Dudley being spoiled, mean, or manipulative?
First 2/3 chapters of the first book. Also first 2 chapters of the fifth book (I think).
Reply:i think at the beginng of every book ,there are signs of his misbehavior toward harry but of course till book 7 that we learn that it was more of his parent effect and doing than his own, because then he shows a feeble sort of gratitude and fruendship toward harry.
Reply:i dont know any page numbers cause i dont have my book her but i'llgive it a go

in the first book, on his birthday he gets 37 presents which ws 1 less than last year so his mother said that they would buy him two presents at the zoo (he originally thaught that he got 36 puthis mother points out another one.)

In the second he makes fun of harry cause its harrys birthday

in the third he gets presents from aunt marge

in the fifth he threatens harry and and blames him for the dementor attack (not unreasonable becasue hary had his wand out, but still)

In the sixth dumbledore mentions how the dursleys didnt love harry and didnt treat him well but at least he escaped the mistreatment that dudley had (not really him being spiled, but a mention of it)

all of these are near the begining of the books near the 2nd 3rd or 4th chapter
Reply:Dudley was generally a spoiled, self-centered mama's boy right up until the beginning of Book 7. The one time I remember Petunia ignoring Dudley being bad was when he stole Harry's cake at the beginning of the first book. Granted, she was probably distracted by Hagrid at the time, but still . . .
Reply:Just read the parts of the first book where Harry is living with or visiting that family. You will find lots of examples.
