Is there Poison Ivy in my garden or is it something else?

I recently started 2 gardens, one in my backyard(tomatoes, broccoli rabe, lettuce) and one around a tree in front of house with flowers(marigolds, coleus, petunias, daisies). Before starting each garden I dug up %26amp; weeded the ENTIRE erea until nothing was left but dirt, which I then raked up and added miracle-gro soil to the top (went through 3 HUGE BAGS),then I transplanted my flowers %26amp; vegetables.A few days ago I noticed a small plant growing near the tomatoes which reminded me of a pic of a marijuana leaf I had said in high school but it was green %26amp; red, three leaves, pointy jagged edges, kinda cool looking so I watered it %26amp; it is getting bigger, then I noticed the same small plant now growing in my flower garden in fron of house. IS this poison ivy or could it be some wildflower? It looks pretty cool, I thought maybe it sprouted from seeds I had planted last year but now I'm wondering should I pull them up,does it sound like poison?Dark maroon %26amp; green-3 leaves, points on top-jagged edges

Is there Poison Ivy in my garden or is it something else?
There are a lot of plants out there than can match the description you gave. Poison Ivy usually turns reddish in the fall rather than the summer. One thing to check is the stem. If it is brown and woody, it might be poison ivy. If it is green or has thorns it is more likely a bramble or even a wild blackberry bush. If it is woody but segmented, it might be a heavenly bamboo bush, which isn't really a bamboo but looks something like it.

Check out the pictures of poison ivy on google images or yahoo images and then check the stem on your plants. Make sure you wear long sleeves and gloves because it if is poison ivy, you don't want it touching your skin.

Like Rich Z mentioned, please do not burn poison ivy. The oils can become airborn and be inhaled. Poison ivy in the mouth and throat is rather unpleasant.
Reply:Here is an image of poison ivy http://westendpediatrics.com/whatsnew/im...

The leaves tend to be shiny with a wooden stem and those clusters of three leaves. It also has tendrils on the stem that will stick to nearby trees to attach the vine to those trees and let it grow up along the trunk.

If it is poison ivy put on rubber gloves or heavy work gloves and yank it out. Bag it (don't burn it) and seal it for the trash pickup.
Reply:You probably have a Virginia Creeper--not poisonous, but very invasive. They turn beautiful red shades in fall. Some have 5 leaves, some have 3.
Reply:Here is an image of poison ivy. Ovate leaves. Canabis has lanceolate leaves always in odd numbers, usually 5 - 7

Reply:Google pictures of poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and compare the pictur to your plants.

Remeber the old saying -- "Leaves of three -- let them be!"
Reply:sounds like it to me look it up on yahoo or google
Reply:sounds like poison ivy to me.

look at some pics....go to poison-ivy.org/
Reply:Without a picture this is really hard to answer. It kind of sound like a tree coming up though. Maybe a red maple sapling. Poison Ivy usually is a vine, not an upright plant. I would do a search on Google for pics of poison ivy to make sure. DO NOT PULL IT UP BY HAND. There are some really good poison ivy sprays that kill just poison ivy that you could spray to avoid contact. If you do pull it up - make sure to wear gloves and through the gloves away too. The oil from the plant can last on materials/tools for a very long time too. Be very cautious until you are certain.
Reply:Is it a vine or a plant? If it is a vine it sounds like poison ivy or poison oak. Although oak is not so red.
Reply:There are more plants than just poison ivy that have clusters of three leaves, but poison ivy is pretty distinctive looking in the way the leaves look (although their actual shade, size and shape can vary, and it has a tendency to try to blend in with surrounding plants).

I can DEFINITELY find it in my own yard, and find plenty every year, and I always pull it up by the roots -- usually bare-handed, and then I immediately wash that hand (use ONLY one hand and don't touch anything else, like your face or other arms, or doorknobs with that hand) with an oil-cutting soap, such as Dawn. It's an oil (uroshiol oil) in poison ivy that causes the allergic reaction. I don't recommend the barehanded pulling for everyone... I came by it by accident, when I was pulling weeds bare-handed and accidentally pulled some P.I. that way one day and decided to just go back and grab the rest I had seen that way and try it -- but my allergy isn't as severe as some people's is. Someone who is HIGHLY allergic might not be able to wash it off (using gloves, however, you never know if you've washed it all off, or not).

Anyway, the only way I can tell you for sure if you have poison ivy is if you email me a picture of it -- close enough that I can see one or two leaf clusters, fairly well lit and in focus...

My email address I JeffAHayes@aol.com -- I know, I know... I'm BEGGING for spam, but I have spam filters.

Good luck!

Clown Violets. Can you help?

I planted clown violets in my flower bed this year. What is the best way to care for them as far as watering and sunlight. I wish I had just gotten more petunia's because Im pretty good with them. But, I didn't so, how can I get the best of the violets. I really want them to bloom!

Clown Violets. Can you help?
they might not bloom till fall! they usually bloom in the spring and fade as it gets hotter, then pop back up in the coolest fall months! don't do anything to em and they might put on a few blooms and go to seed....but they do their best when the weather is kinda chilly! Just water em once a week.. deeply and they'l be fine!

Why are my petunias getting yellow tipped leaves?

It is possible that it is too much water if you have the petunias planted in a pot that does not drain. I can't think of many plants that like to stand in water, but petunias are quite thristy plants. I water mine every other day.

Are they potted in cast iron? I have two cast iron washpots that I plant petunias in every year. After a while, the inside of the pot rusts, and the soil absorbs the rust. One year I planted petunias 3 times and watched them turn yellow and die before I figured out what the problem was. Now I dump all of the soil out every three years and spray paint the inside of the pot. In fact, I go ahead and spray paint the whole thing with cheap black spray paint. Let it set a day. If you see any places that need a touch up, spray on more paint. You can get a can for around a dollar at Wal-Mart, so be generous with the paint. Then you can put your rocks back in the bottom and add new soil. Your petunias will thank you!

If neither one of these situations is a problem for you, consider cutting them back. Some varieties like to trail. Others like to be pruned. I cut mine back every 3-4 weeks. What is left in the pot looks pretty pitiful, but I feed them immediately, and I have new blooms within a week.

Hope this helps. Petunias are my favorite flowers, so I hope your's grow to suit you!

Why are my petunias getting yellow tipped leaves?
That means there dehidrated you need to put them in a big black trash bag And water them every 2weeks and take them out of the bag in october
Reply:It could be that the soil is deficient in nitrogen. The lack of which sometimes causes leaves to yellow. Make sure you are fertilizing properly.
Reply:To much water.

Does anyone know what kind of flowers that deer won't eat. I'm trying to keep some planted on a pets grave.

I had petunias planted and the deer ate them up last night. I don't know what to plant that they won't eat. Any help is appreciated.

Does anyone know what kind of flowers that deer won't eat. I'm trying to keep some planted on a pets grave.
Like some others have said...there really is no true deer resistant plant or flower and every herd will eat different flowers. But the suggestions that were given are generally eaten as a last resort. Here are some other "usually" deer resistant flowers that weren't mentioned: Oriental Poppy, Iris, Daffodils, Foxglove, snd Butterfly bush. My suggestion is to try 2 or 3 different kinds of flowers that have been given as suggestions, and if they get eaten, try some others. Pepper spray, hair, urine, deer repellents all work for a short amount of time and constantly need to be reapplied. It would be the one day that you forgot to reapply the deer repellent that they would come and eat all your plants to nubs!

Good luck to you!
Reply:plant marigolds or onion sets in with your flowers or go to your local salon and ask for the sweepings deer hate human hair......
Reply:You can try columbine, Yarrow or salvia. No flower or plant is 100% deer proof however. It depends on the herd and what other food sources are around.
Reply:Marigolds....deer (and rabbits and squirrels and most other animals) don't like the smell or taste. Good Luck and Sorry for your loss.
Reply:I don't know of ANY fresh plant they don't like; but, I CAN make a suggestion to make the deer leave what you plant.

Get 5-6 hot, hot peppers (the hotter the better). Cut a slice down one side and boil them. Dilute the mixture with water and spray your plants. You don't have to dilute the mixture, it just makes it go farther. You can spray it directly on leaves, stem, anywhere on the plant and it won't hurt it.
Reply:i heard that lavender, or lilac works. one of the two or both.hope this works good luck
Reply:this may seem extreme, but human urine will keep them away.

Do Rabbits Eat Petunias?

Hi,

We have a really bad rabbit problem in our neighborhood. I know that our neighborhood rabbits love marigolds so we won't plant them. Does anyone know if rabbits like petunias?

Any suggestions on how to keep the rabbits away?

Thanks.

Do Rabbits Eat Petunias?
Yes they do! It happened to me last year. I had several pots and they ate them up. One pot was high, and a chair was close by. A rabbit hopped up on the chair, then got IN the pot and was munching away. I let it go because they need food, too. And, I'm soft-hearted.

You can get animal repellant from farm and home stores. This should help, as would putting down some dog hair, if you know someone with a dog that sheds excessively; like our husky. By the way, the rabbits and our husky peacefully co-exist.

I use Moth Balls , and a Deer Off product that smells like rotten eggs.

The moth balls last a while the Deer off, need to be re-applied after every time it rains.

Get a female cat, or a female dog, like a border collie or a hound,

This is all about carrots! Why do Possums moles and rabbits eat my carrots?

I've put up a wire fence, but moles dig under it, and some jackrabbits..sheesh! they just jump the fence with their big

ol' kangaroo feet, and eat all of Granny Crabtree's flowertops.

Granny likes to grow begonias and petunias, and when she

finds they've all been mowed down by them frisky jackrabbits

she just scrunches up her face and sez'------

Granny Crabtree: "aw..

This is all about carrots! Why do Possums moles and rabbits eat my carrots?
I have an idea. Get some old tires off of grandpas tractor (clean the grease off) and lay them in the garden on top of some hardware cloth. Fill them up with soil and plant your carrots in them. Get some more chicken wire and either make your fence taller, or give it a wire roof. Voila! carrots are protected from below and from above!
Reply:Bunnys LOVE carrots, however Moles are insectavores and DO NOT eat carrots. I wonder about Possums too???
Reply:One could turn the question around and say what berk has gone and put chicken wire round my larder. Now keep your pesky missus off my carrots. Next time you think about pulling up any of my carrots just remember:

What was the story with remember my last? (harry potter)?

Petunia got a howler from Dumbledore saying remember my last. I thought it was going to be explained in the last book but I didn't catch an explanation. Does anyone understand it?

What was the story with remember my last? (harry potter)?
I thought we would get more of an explanation, such as why saving harry would be imoportant to petunia
Reply:hmm.. your right. i don't remember it either. i guess i didn't catch it. or mayeb it wsn't said?

maybe it referred to soemthign happening, when Petunia begged him to let her attend and then she didn't want to go?

or wait... wasn't somethign said about how he had arrived before, saying something about harry or magic?

hmmmmmm
Reply:It happened on pg 40 in OOTP, after Harry and Dudley were attacked by the dementors, Vernon was yelling "get out" and wanted to kick Harry out of their house, he was tired of all the owls, the magic, and now his son's attack...I thought the words, "remember my last", referred to Lilly's last request to her sister... asking Petunia to take care of Harry...Dumbledore reminded Petunia of her promise made to her sister Lily..

Now Knight1192a has made me go dig up my older books...I love these discussions...
Reply:It's just referring to the letter that Dumbledore wrote and left with baby Harry, explaining the blood-enchantment and why Harry has to stay with the Dursley's until he is 17.
Reply:It's explained as the letter left to the Dursley's when Harry was left on the step. That's all. :)
Reply:It was stating Remember my last as in my last letter when Harry was left there as a baby and he ha to stay there until 17 so his mother's charm would last but that was all explained before book 7 even came out and I was hoping it would explain about Aunt Petunia more but besides the fact that she was jealous of Lilly and the fact that she wrote to Dumbledore doesn't help us undrstand her more i was a little disappointed with that but maybe since it was a small detail JKR wanted us to invent the rest ourselves
Reply:I think that was explained in the 6th book at the end, but i forgot what it meant, i think it is just about how she has to let harry stay with her until he is 17, because at the time she was trying to kick him out, and if he did his mothers charm would be broken. And so dumbledore was reminding tuney of this
Reply:It was at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore sent Aunt Petunia a Howler saying this, because Uncle Vernon had been ready to kick Harry out of the house, and Petunia had promised she'd keep him at least until he was seventeen so that he would still be protected. So he was basically saying "remember my last request."
Reply:The protection Harry's mother gave to Harry doesn't just protect him, it also protects the Dursleys. Because Petunia is Lily's sister and therefore related to Harry by blood, as long as the Dursley's take care of Harry and allow him to call their home his, he will be protected against Voldemort and the Death Eaters while he remains at #4 Privet Drive and calls it his home. Which means that they will also be protected. The minute it is no longer his home it is no longer a safe haven for Harry and Voldemort and the Death Eaters can attack the Dursleys at will.

When Dumbledore left Harry at the Dursley's, he left a letter for Petunia explaining this. The howler Dumbledore sends to her is a reminder about that letter and that protection. Even if she doesn't care for Harry, she still loves Dudley. So it's in her own son's best intrest, as well as that of her husband and herself, that she sees to it that Harry remains with them.

Something ate my Petunias?

I went to look at my flowers this morning and half of my petunias are missing their flowers, some of them were plucked from the ground. I've never seen this happen, could it be deer? We have deer, but I didn't think they liked petunias.

Something ate my Petunias?
I work for a landscape co. in Texas and I have seen at least two varieties of annual flowers completely pulled from the soil. I did not see the perpetrator, but by the way the tops were chopped off, I would bet the rent it was a white-tail deer. There were also hoof imprints in the compost that obviously were from the above-mentioned critter.
Reply:petunias can be poisonous to some animals so whatever ate it is prolly not having to good a day.
Reply:Check the area for snails and/or slugs...they can wreck havoc overnight.

Where can I buy seeds for blue petunias, that are actually blue and not lavender or purple?

Color is in the eye of the beholder, but try these two -- the first is one I think is more blue than purple, the second is LOTS of them, with photos, so you can see if any of them match your needs. Good luck!

Where can I buy seeds for blue petunias, that are actually blue and not lavender or purple?
As the first poster said, color is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Below are 2 additional sources. Burpee is a well-known seed provider and they offer a sky-blue petunia. Swallowtail Garden's is more of a midnight blue.
Reply:Blue petunias are produced by a very complex process involving the addition of genes from other plants. The resulting seeds are expensive, patented and marketed to growers who grow special plants like Proven Winners to gardeners. I can almost guarentee you that most of the seed you can buy for blue petunias in catalogues will be a disappointment for you.

Caterpillars are eating my petunias what should i do?

The caterpillars are budworms, and they also eat geraniums. Get an all-natural formulation of Bt, which is a bacteria which only affects caterpillars. Check in your local plant nursery, or online. GardensAlive.com is one good source. Bt is better than spraying a general pesticide, because it is not toxic and only targets the caterpillar, rather than potentially harming bees, ladybugs, and other beneficial insects. Once you spray it on the petunias (and geraniums, too, if you have any), the caterpillars will stop eating almost immediately. The Bt paralyzes them and they starve to death.

Caterpillars are eating my petunias what should i do?
Spray them with Caterpillar Killer, works great, buy it at the hardware stores that have nursery departments. It's concentrated so you dilute it yourself and fill a spray bottle with it.
Reply:Go fishing!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:spray with liquie Sevin or Malathon
Reply:Ortho "Bug Be Gone" insect spray. Get it at Home Depot or most garden shops. If you ask them, they may have other suggestions. Lots of stuff on the maket. Read the labels to select the right stuff for whatever you want to kill.

My petunias are a bit "leggy" where should I cut them?

You can pinch them just above a set of leaves but do a third at a time so it will continue to bloom on some stems. It does not take them long to snap back. I would leave about four inches if that looks good to you. You might try feeding them with Blossom Booster by Vigoro and you won't believe how well they will do. Happy gardening!

My petunias are a bit "leggy" where should I cut them?
just pinch them down to a set of leaves. Go low if you need too, they should be fine.

Evil scientist redecorating problems?

Double damn! I asked about personal fashion with my last question, but someone just told me they do a home make-over, too. I just found out that idiot mad scientist Farnsworth signed me up for the “Queer Eye” guys. Now I'm in trouble. True, I may be moving to another secret lair soon, but I'm going to have to watch these guys like a hawk. Satan only knows how they will decide to redecorate; what color they will decide to paint the weather-control machine and if the command center will look good with sprigs of petunias.

Just like last time, I'm going to have to set boundaries. If they televise this debacle, then I don't want to become a laughing stock for having the only solar heat-ray that's got flowers stenciled all over it. How can I best do this? What can I say to them that will help them improve the image of my lair and not make me look bad if this shows up on cable?

Evil scientist redecorating problems?
Sounds like you are up a creek without a villianous paddle!

Stay away from trendy underworld stencils. They are so overdone on weapons of mass destruction and the like. I've seen Farnsworth's lab and they are everywhere!

I think you should consider a highly-stylized bio-hazard symbol, and adopt that as your overall theme.

You could applique/decoupage it on your bunson burner table, your mousepad, maybe even a bold mosaic tile mandala in the middle of your la-BOR-atory, if your buget permits.

It is a dastardly dilemma! Best of luck on your quest for sinister chic.
Reply:You can never go wrong with monochrome. You'd be amazed at how far greys, black and white go. It still maintains that cold, diabolical look, while adding an air of elegance and formality.

You need to decide on a style. Do you want to Art Nuevo? Do you want to do something more modern? Just try to stick with a look. Superheroes can be really critical of your decor. They will mock you. It will be upsetting.

Try to stay away from the whole dungeon look. It's been played out and always feels unoriginal.

Don't let the decorators push you into any colors that sound like "dusty rose, chartreuse or mauve." Stick to your death ray, no lace curtains!

Petunias look best with a frequent pinching back, to keep them bushy. But you probably already know that. Here's excellent info from The Connecticut Agricultrual Experiment Station @ http://www.ct.gov/caes/cwp/view.asp?a=28...

Petunia (Petunia)

Plant Health Problems

Diseases caused by Fungi:

Botrytis blight, Botrytis cinerea.

Flowers develop whitish spots, turn a papery brown, and become covered with gray, fuzzy masses. Senescing flowers are particularly susceptible. Tan to brown spots with a target-like appearance can also develop on the leaves. These patches are often associated with spent flowers which have dropped onto the leaf surface. This disease is particularly troublesome during periods of extended cloudy, humid, wet weather.

Good sanitation practices including grooming the plants and removing spent or senescing flowers can minimize the potential for infection. These affected tissues should be carefully removed and discarded when they are dry. It is also important to avoid wetting the flowers when watering and crowding plants. Adequate spacing between the plants can promote good air circulation. Control can also be achieved with the use of fungicide sprays applied as soon as symptoms are visible. Among the compounds registered for use in Connecticut are chlorothalonil and thiophanate-methyl. Consult the label for dosage rates and safety precautions.

Diseases caused by Viruses:

Mosaic and other viruses, Tobacco mosaic virus and others.

Petunia is susceptible to several of the viruses which are also found on tomatoes and potatoes. Light and dark green mottled areas, mosaics, and crinkling of leaves indicate infection by the tobacco mosaic virus. Other viruses may result in dwarfed, cupped leaves and witches'-brooms symptoms.

Control of these diseases is focused on prevention since once plants are infected, they cannot be cured. It is important to eliminate and remove infected plants as soon as they are recognized and to eliminate other symptomatic plants since these viruses usually have very broad host ranges. It is also helpful to place petunias at some distance from other solanaceous plants such as tomato, flowering tobacco, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers to further reduce the chances of infection. It is also critical to manage insect populations.

Impatiens necrotic spot virus, virus, (INSV).

Symptoms can appear as black ringspots or blotches on the leaves. This virus is transmitted by the western flower thrips.

Insect Problems

Greenhouse orthezia. Orthezia insignis.

This greenhouse insect often infests bedding plants out of doors, including petunia. This is a dark-green or brown scale-like insect that secretes wax as it feeds, leaving behind a long plate of white wax. It damages plants by withdrawing sap. When needed, malathion or imidacloprid, which are among the compounds registered for control of this pest in Connecticut, can be applied according to label directions.

Potato flea beetle, Epitrix cucumeris.

This tiny black flea beetle feeds upon a great variety of plants, of which one is petunia. This is a small, black, jumping flea beetle that feeds upon the leaves of potato, tomato, tobacco, and many other plants, eating out small round holes from the underside, but leaving the upper epidermis. The remaining tissue soon dies, however, and falls away, leaving holes through the leaves which turn yellow and later turn brown and die. This beetle is not much more than one-sixteenth of an inch in length. It lives through the winter under rubbish and in other sheltered places, and may first be found in the spring on plantain and other weeds, sometimes also on the leaves of apple, wild cherry, and maple. As soon as the preferred food such as petunia plants appear in the garden or field, the flea beetles gather upon them. The overwintering beetles lay eggs in the soil in June. The larvae feed upon tubers and roots of the host plants. An abnormal growth sometimes takes place around each injury. The larvae transform and beetles emerge early in July.

These beetles feed on the petunia foliage as long as the plants are green and temperatures are favorable. These insects then hibernate until the following spring. If the flea beetles are controlled in the spring when they first begin feeding, fewer beetles will be present in the fall and the following spring. See Flea Beetle fact sheet.

Yellow woollybear, Diacrisia virginica.

The whitish, yellowish, or brownish hairy caterpillars feed upon petunia and many other kinds of plants in the garden in late summer. This caterpillar is about 2" long when fully grown. It makes its cocoon of its own hairy coat and silk and hides in sheltered places, sometimes 20 to 30 being clustered together. The insect overwinters in this stage and the moths emerge in June and July. The moth has a wing spread of between 11/2 and 2", and is pure white with a few black dots, blackish antennae, and orange abdomen with a row of black spots on the back and along each side. Handpicking is the usual means of control.

Bug spray did this to my petunias now what?
Whenbever you hit a delication bloom with a spray or even direct water, the bloom will die. Fresh blooms cannot handle direct ontact witha spray or water. Your best bet is to deadhead (cut off) all the blooms that have been affected even if it means removing entire branches. Petunias are hardy and they will bounce back but it may take awhile depending on how much damage has to be removed. The best method for removing J. beetles is to take a bowl of soapy water and just knock the beetles off into the soapy water. They die almost immediately.

Question about small detail in Harry Potter and The Sorcerors Stone?

It said that Harry's hair grew back over night after the horrible haircut Aunt Petunia gave him. Could this mean that Harry was showing some small signs of being a metamorphagus? (sp?) Or is it just one of those strange thing that young witches and wizards do?

Question about small detail in Harry Potter and The Sorcerors Stone?
He rethinks that event when Hagrid talks about the signs of being a wizard. From that, it seems that it is just one of the strange things that a young wizard can do. He wanted so badly to get his hair back that it grew back.
Reply:It's just an involuntary use of magic, which is pretty common among young witches and wizards. Another example in the Sorcerer's Stone movie is when Harry puts Dudley into the snake enclosure at the zoo.

Harry is neither an Animagus (like James, Sirius, and Wormtail) nor a Metamorphmagus (like Tonks).
Reply:Good thinking, but being a metamorphagus also includes the changing of hair color, and if Harry was a metamorphagus, he would have shown signs of it ever since he was born, like Teddy Lupin in the Deathly Hallows.
Reply:it think it's just one of those things that happens since he didn't want his hair cut. If he was a metamorphagus, his hair would look completely different then it did.
Reply:Hi!

I always though that was one of those strange things young witches and wizards do.

Back then, Harry was scared to go to school with a hideous haircut, so his magic made his hair grow back to normal. I think to have qualified as a Metamorphagus I'd have waited to see if things like that happened more often (hair color, styles, length), and not only with his head, but with different body parts (nose, mouth, eye, etc...).

Goodluck!
Reply:I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that Harry is a metamorphagus. The hair growing back quickly can only be attributed to his being a wizard.
Reply:strange things withches and wizards do
Reply:It's just the sign of Harry being a wizard.
Reply:You're thinking more deep, Jk wouldnt hv nvr thought of smethin lyk dat
Reply:No, hes not a metamorph, whatever. ITs just alittle thing jkrowling put into her story becuase it was a magic book and wanted to show how things work witha wizard and put oin a little comical thing thats all, but good investigating!
Reply:It didn't show that he was a metamorphagus, it just showed that he had signs of being a wizard. He couldn't control being a wizard at that time.
Reply:That's a really interesting theory! But no, I'm pretty sure that was just one of those strange little bits of magic that young wizards accidentally do.

After all, if he was a metamorphogus, wouldn't he have done something about that patch of hair that won't lie flat? ;)

If you sprinkle Preen on top of freshly planted Petunias will it kill them?

It won't wipe off.

If you sprinkle Preen on top of freshly planted Petunias will it kill them?
Preen is meant to kill seeds (mainly WEED seeds). After you sprinkle it, you should not disturb the soil.

The Good News is that this will prevent weeds around your petunias!!

Good Luck!!
Reply:Preen is a germination inhibitor that isn't supposed to impact growing plants. Your small plants are probably okay, but check the Preen literature or contact the company for the details.

How do you stop petunias from growing straggly?

during this time of year...cut back the larger branches by 1/3......this will make the plant fuller. during the rest of the year, make sure you pinch off the spent blooms ...below the green part that the flower grows from....this will give you at least twice as many flowers

How do you stop petunias from growing straggly?
You have to pinch them back, get rid of all dead blooms. Pinch back to first set of leaves below the bloom.
Reply:Cut the stalks back by about half. They will produce more flowers and be bushier.
Reply:"Pinch off" the straggly part a few inches. Also when the blooms are spent pick most of them off. These two things will provide you with a full, healthy, plant in full bloom.

Of course water and a little fertilizer helps keep it going.

Happy Gardening!
Reply:You need to trim off the old flowers, the more you trim the more they will fill out. Unless they are petunia wave, these do not need to be trimed they grow beatiful 1 plant will fill about 2 sq ft.

I have just started planting flowers in the last few years and I live in Wisconsin and I have a question....?

At what temperature should I bring my petunias in? I have several hanging baskets and it still gets chilly here at night and was thinking when it falls below a certain temp, I should bring them in, but not sure what that temp is. Please help me save my flowers! :)

I have just started planting flowers in the last few years and I live in Wisconsin and I have a question....?
I've lived here all my life and it's better to be safe than sorry. We live about a mile from Lake Michigan, and the lake tends to keep us a little warmer, but I still cover or bring in plants if they are forecasting 35 or below. If you are well inland, or in a low lying area (cold air descends), you are more susceptible to random frosts.

Some plants are more fragile also. Marigolds are probably the strongest and Petunias are mid-range, but Impatiens will turn to mush at the slightest frost.
Reply:If there is a chance of frost then you should bring them in. Usually around 34 or so. It should be warm enough now where you shouldn't have to worry about them.

Can I water outdoor flowers with used bath water?

My area is under water restrictions. I have petunias and impatiens in my yard. Would it be ok to use the water from my baby's bath on them? It has a little Johnson's baby shampoo in it. I am trying to be creative in order to save my gardening from dehydration and certain death!

Can I water outdoor flowers with used bath water?
Definitely. If you use biodegradeable laundry detergent, you can use your washing machine water too. Just keep an eye on the ph (you can get a kit from nursery and hardware stores cheap) and test the soils every now and then. If the flowers start to look a little sick check it too. If it is too alkaline, just use some manure. If it is too alkaline, just add some garden lime. Sometimes, having soaps and detergents in the water help to keep moisture in the soil as well. Definitely don't use kitchen water though, as the oils will ruin your soil.
Reply:Yes. However, sorry to disagree with you Don, but bath and laundry water is probably not best on your vegetables. The salts (alkaline) from the soaps and detergents can actually turn your soil against the acidity that vegies crave.

But on most of your flowering plants you shouldn't need to worry.
Reply:I used to do that before we got rain barrells. You can also put five gallon buckets in there when you take a shower. You'd be amazed how quickly they fill up!
Reply:Sure you can. You can even water your vegetables with it. The soap may help with insect control.
Reply:Good luck...both petunias and impatiens like plenty of water. If this is a frequent problem, try planting more "drought tolerant" flowers. However, to answer your question, go ahead and use the bath water. Also, water from the washing machine if not too soapy. Try putting the bath tub plug in while you're taking a shower so you can re-use that water too.
Reply:It depends on where you are, but for the most part gray water (what flows through your drains) is illegal to use on landscapes. This isn't to say that people don't do it, I have a professor that does, but he has a special system he installed to ensure it works correctly and prevents sewage water from backing through into the system. You can use your baby's bath water, as long as the detergents you use for the shampoo/soap/bubbles is biodegradable and contains no added chemicals. So, the stuff you would buy at a co-op (read the label).

Also, you may want to consider other alternative strategies to deal with the water restriction. Such strategies as providing shade, using drip irrigation, and irrigation strategies (such as performing efficiency tests on your watering practices whether by underground or hand to ensure you don't overwater.

If I didn't quite answer your question or you want to know more, let me know, this is off the top of my head, but if I dig into my resources, I could probably find you a better explanation. Good luck!
Reply:yes, just make sure it's room temperature and its clean water.
Reply:I think that's a great idea! The soap won't hurt anything. Sometimes I use a little soapy water to get rid of bugs. (Just don't throw out the baby with the bath water!:)
Reply:SURE YOU CAN WATER IS ALL THE SAME EVEN IF IT HAS SOMETHING IN IT

Traveling on bus with TWO 11 month olds and one mommy?

I am trying to figure out how to do this. I have a Moby Wrap and on the site it shows that you can use it with two babies.

I will be carrying two 11 month olds and one small Zooper Salsa stroller and Petunia Pickle Bag but it turns into a backpack.

Traveling on bus with TWO 11 month olds and one mommy?
Oh...you poor thing. I travelled by bus with a one year old and a newborn once, and boy was it difficult. Passing the 8 hours on the bus was probably the hardest part.

You will certainly have your hands full. I vote for a double stroller. It is probably your best bet. At least once you are off the bus, you have a convenient way to carry both of them.

Good luck...
Reply:i went on a train with my son and my husband that was hard it depends what the distance is long or short? id say just use a twin buggy it will save you having to carry them

I just planted my petunias and now there is a frost alert tonight...what do I do???!!!?

Cover them with straw,a blanket, burlap!! But not with plastic,as they can freeze from the plastic touching them!!!

Cover them with a sheet,or paper bag,or anything that can keep the frost crystals off them.

Then hope the frost doesn't kill them.It might kill them anyways,or they could survive!Good luck!

How long do petunias grow in warm southern ca climate? (1,2,3 years)?

They don't have to die. They can reseed themselves. Keep them fertilized, watered and pick off the dead blooms. Make sure that you have good, loose soil that is replenished occasionally and lightly mulched. Have fun!!!

How much to charge as a Nanny?

How do i get rid of aphids that are on my petunias, we also have a nest of birds on the plant.?

There's a product made by Bayer and it's called "Tree %26amp; Shrub Insect Control". The active ingredient contains; "Imidaclorpid" and it's VERY SAFE to animals and plants! You just simply mix it with water and then water it in around the roots of your ornamental plants. The directions included with the product are very easy to follow.

The solution is absorbed through the roots and it translocates up into the foilage protecting them from most of the sucking insects (except mites) that you find in the garden. It provides up to 12 months of control.

I've used it on a number of ornamental plants last summer and I haven't spotted any aphids so far this year!

NOTE: The product doesn't act right away but within 2 weeks after application, you'll notice it working. Just be patient.

Hope this was of some help. GOOD LUCK!

get rid of the birds nest, they aphids LOVE birds nests. and you can try spritzing the leaves with soapy water
Reply:lady bugs... find some lady bugs and put them around the plant..

they love to eat aphids
Reply:Get lady bugs from a growers supply place. You can also try to use a solution of regular dish soap and water to eradicate them, but this is less effective and takes multiple applications.

To apply the solution use a sprayer and/or dip the plant.
Reply:Diatomaceous Earth will kill anything with an exoskeleton, beetles, ants, roaches, aphids, white flies, mites, pretty much all you basic bugs. Best of all it will not harm humans or pets or your plants.

Get it here, their's is food grade, which is the only kind you want. If you find it at a local garden center be certain that it is food grade, you do not want the other kind.
Reply:buy some ladybugs and sprinkle them on the aphids.

im not sure though if you can buy ladybugs this time of year.

What would happen to HARRY POTTER if he was NOT raised by the DURSLEYS, but by SIRIUS BLACK and REMUS LUPIN?

We all know that Dumbledore arranged Harry to be raised by Petunia Dursley, since she's still Harrry's aunt and covers Lily's protection by her blood.

But anyway, what if when Voldemort failed to kill Harry when he was infant, Sirius came earlier than Hagrid and took Harry away with him? And what if Sirius didn't bother to chase Wormtail, but contacted Lupin instead to help him raise Harry (so that Sirius could explain all to Dumbledore and Order of Phoenix about Wormtail's betrayal, thus avoiding his 12-year imprisonment in Azkaban)? Remember, Sirius is Harry's godfather. I think he would be such responsible godfather there. Would Harry be raised in Grimmauld Place no.12 in Black manner (not their Blood-purity idea, Sirius himself disposed it), aristocratic wizarding family way? Would Harry even notice his Muggle aunt and family?

How would this affect the entire series? How would Harry befriend Ron and Hermione? How about Scabbers and the Weasleys?

What would happen to HARRY POTTER if he was NOT raised by the DURSLEYS, but by SIRIUS BLACK and REMUS LUPIN?
It is difficult to imagine that Sirius wouldn't immediately pursue Wormtail after he realized he had betrayed Lily and James, but it is a fascinating question. It was possible for Petunia to have refused to take Harry in; if she'd turned him away he probably would've been sent to live with Sirius. Her decision sealed the charm Dumbledore had created from the lingering effects of Lily's blood sacrifice: "You need return there only once a year, but as long as you can still call it home, whilst you are there he cannot hurt you. Your aunt knows this. I explained what I had done in the letter I left, with you, on her doorstep. She knows that allowing you houseroom may well have kept you alive for the past fifteen years." (OP37) But, Petunia could've decided that she didn't care and then it would've been up to Sirius to protect Harry.

If Sirius was allowed to raise Harry with Lupin's help Harry would be different than the Harry we currently know. Harry would've inherited his parents' money, as Sirius inherited the Black family money, so he would've been raised with plenty of food, clothing, and other personal belongings. He'd also be raised knowing what had truly happened the night Voldemort attempted to kill him. Sirius and Lupin would've shared their fond memories of Lily and James with Harry and he'd have grown up around others that knew them. Harry would've been told about his Muggle Aunt and cousin, so he'd know about their lack of interest in him, and he would've avoided them. No reason to attempt to force a relationship on a person that despised his parents and didn't care if he lived or died, right? So much of what we know about Harry would be different if he hadn't lived with the Dursleys; he'd have a strong sense of self, having been raised with love instead of as an imposition. He'd have confidence and feel valued, instead of feeling uncertain and like an outcast. He'd probably still be a kind, generous, brave boy, but it would've affected his perception of people.

One of the reasons Harry disliked Draco from their first meeting was that he reminded him of his spoiled cousin Dudley and he talked about things he knew nothing about. If Sirius and Lupin had raised him, Harry would've lived a priviledged life too and would've been familiar with the topics Draco mentioned. Harry befriended Ron easily because he knew what it was like to have no money and nothing new, having been forced to use Dudley's hand me downs. With Sirius %26amp; Lupin, he'd have always had money and new things, so he wouldn't be able to relate to Ron's embarassment. Similarly with Hermione, Harry related to her lonliness and her feelings of being an outsider also being new to the Wizarding world and not having had friends at school before because of Dudley. With Sirius %26amp; Lupin, Harry would've been happy and always included, so he wouldn't be able to relate to her either. He may have become friends with them anyway, but who knows?

This would've altered the lives of Sirius and Lupin as well. Sirius would've avoided incarceration at Azkaban and may have married. Lupin would've lived comfortably and not have the tatty robes he now wears. They would've home-schooled Harry in defense against the Dark Arts, transfiguration, flying, charms, and care of magical creatures. He'd have learned about Quidditch, Voldemort, the Death Eaters, the Marauders, Snape, blood status, etc. long before he went to Hogwarts. Harry would also have the benefit of Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix to tutor him, tell him about his parents and help keep him safe. I don't know if Sirius would've raised him in #12 Grimmauld Place, but if he had taken advantage of the security in place there it would've been a different experience. They could've brought in house elves to clean up, banished Kreacher to Hogwarts, used Silencing charms on the portraits, and redecorated in Gryffindor colors if they wanted to.

Oh, and Sirius would've told Dumbledore about switching with Peter for the position of Secret Keeper, so there would've been a massive man hunt for Peter Pettigrew. He would not have been able to live with the Weasleys as "Scabbers" with it common knowledge that he was an Animagus that took the form of a rat. He'd have been forced to live in hiding - not safe from good wizards or Dark ones. Cornelius Fudge would've probably even gone to the Muggle Prime Minister to warn the Muggles to watch for Peter, as he did when Sirius escaped from Azkaban.
Reply:Thanks! I like answering "What if..." types of Harry Potter questions. I think it is fun to think about it and interesting to see what other people have to say. Great question. =) Report It

Reply:great answer, although, i think all of you are forgetting that harry would probably still be friends with ron beacuae sirius and ron parents know each other from the order! he might not know hermione, but people stay in touch and a group like the order is bound to be close. Report It

Reply:That couldn't happen because Lily set up a protection spell to where Voldemort couldn't step foot in the Dursley's house since they're Harry's family. If he was raised by Sirius and Lupin he'd probably already be dead by now cause Voldemort would of more than likely have found a way.
Reply:he would be working in a elevator
Reply:probably he might know everything he knows about magic earlier
Reply:I think that would totally change the WHOLE thing. You're right, he wouldn't befriend Ron and Hermione the same way, because he would know all about magic, as he would be brought up around it, and he would know how to get onto platform 9 3/4, still though, Sirius likes Ron and Hermione, and Harry would feel the same way about everybody, and Malfoy would still be an ******, so really I think in the end he would have the same friends, and he would still have almost the same personality but with more confidence because he's not always being put down. He would know way more about his parents, and that could be good or bad... you really thought that all out, didn't you. lol.
Reply:he wouldnt prolly and he would know about magic and it wouldnt have much of the action in the books that it has now
Reply:I think he would have been worse off than he was with the Dursleys. He would have had a better life perhaps but I think he would have grown up to be something like Gilderoy Lockhart. I doubt Sirius would have chosen Grimmauld Place as he despised it. His aunt and uncle would have remained blissfully unaware as Harry would of them.
Reply:Interesting. It raises the question of how much Harry's personality is a product of his upbringing withe Dursley's and how much is his native personality.

I'd like to think that Harry is as he is despite the Dursleys, not because of them.

So maybe Sirius would have taken Harry and have been talked into letting the Dursleys rear him by Dumbledore. That would have allowed Harry to know about his heritage much earlier, to say nothing of protection against the Dursleys abuse of Harry. Harry could have entered Hogwarts much more aware of things and very likely would have had an easier time of things in OotP and HBP.

I don't think Dumbledore would have allowed Sirius to keep Harry. If he had, Harry might not have made 11! Consider if the rank-and-file witches and wizards knew at least approximately where Harry lived, the Deatheaters did too.
Reply:there is no way that this would happen. harry must live with the dursleys in order for his protection from his mom to work (remember how in hp and the sorcerer's stone he couldn't be touched but after the blood was taken in hp and the goblet of fire voldemort had harry's blood in him and said i can touch him now and did so causing harry excrutiating pain) so...dumbledore knows this very well (as he reminds petunia with a howler in order of the pheonix) dumbledore would not have let them raise harry for his own protection. they would not disobey dumbledore especially if they knew it was in harry's best intrest. plus in hp 1 dumbledore thought it best that harry not know of his fame, so even if he had been allowed to visit sirius and lupin, they probably would have been under orders not to let him know much about anything else. and if u want to say that maybe lupin and sirius took him and wouldn't tell dumbldore..dumbledore would have figured it out and he is so powerful that i'm sure he could have had some way to take harry and give him to his aunt and uncle... and even if he had known how to get on the platform he still would have met ron and hermione the exact same way, because ron came to harry's train compartment and asked if he could sit there because all the others in front of it were full, so even if he hadn't seen harry at the station he would have still come to that compartment first as he worked his way down the train, and hermione just happened to come by and ask about neville's toad when they met her and they didn't become friends with her until ron had pointed out how annoying she was in classes and the whole troll thing happened...

A graden filled with red and yellow petunias, which wavelengths of light are ?

Which wavelengths of light are... WHAT? You didn't finish the question. Still, I will attempt to help you with an answer.

Visible light has a range of 400 to 700 nanometers (nm). Flowers are a particular color because they reflect that color while absorbing the others, i.e. blue flowers reflect blue light. Yellow has a wavelength centered on 570 nm; red is centered on 650 nm. See first link below.

Flowers also often have untraviolet reflectivity in the area around the pistils and stamens. This wavelength is invisble to humans, but insects see it. It helps guide the insects to the nectar, and to polinate the flowers. See 2nd link.

I live in MS. Will wave petunias come back each year? Should they be protected from 40 degree temps?

How do you pinch petnuias?

i've been told you have to "pinch" petunias so that they grow better. what exactly does it mean to "pinch" the plant? how do you do it and under what circumstances?

How do you pinch petnuias?
Pruning can stimulate greater flowering of some cultivars of petunias. Cut back plants as needed leaving approximately one-half of the shoot.

After perennials have bloomed, spent flowers and seed pods should be removed. Keep in mind that some flowers do not require deadheading since the seed pods are either not very visible or are quite attractive. Cut the flower stem back to a healthy leaf or side branch. This will keep the plants looking neater and will prevent them from wasting energy by producing seeds. Some perennials reproduce by seeds and these volunteer plants can become overcrowded and invasive. Deadheading will reduce the problem. Some perennials can be forced to rebloom if cut back after the first flush of flowers.

Some perennials will produce thicker and fuller growth if the terminal is pinched. This reduces the height and decreases the likelihood that the plant will be blown over by wind or rain or from the weight of large, heavy flowers. The result is a more compact plant with more, but sometimes smaller, flowers. Pinching often delays flowering. Plants that respond to pinching include chrysanthemums, asters, and phlox. Start pinching in early spring when the shoots are several inches long and discontinue by early July.
Reply:You pinch the ends off like trimming them or pruning but we call it pinching. Other wise the get long and scraggly. This will keep them bushier and healthier looking.
Reply:Pinch petunias when they are six inches tall to promote branching. If you have a plant with a single main stem but you really want a bushy plant and plenty of flowers then you can pinch out (remove) the tip of the main stem to encourage the lateral (side) shoots to develop.
Reply:Some people call this "dead-heading" as well. Basically, as the flowers die, you just pinch off the spent bloom. This promotes new blooms.

Is it safe to put my hanging baskets out? southern england?

ive got them ready as well as my pots and planters. all filled with petunias busy lizzies fuchsias etc.im off on holiday soon and i'd like to get them all in situ ready for my neighbour to care for them.

Is it safe to put my hanging baskets out? southern england?
"Never before the 1st of June" is the general rule to avoid frost. You could put them out now but just keep an eye on the weather forecast in case there is another frost. If so take them down and put in the garage for the night. Any frosts we get now will not be hard so something like a garage will be warm enough.
Reply:My dad lives in the south and put his out this weekend, there is always a chance of frost in may, so maybe buy some horticultural fleece(d.i.y shops and garden centres, it is not expensive and can be used again for next year) which can be used to cover them if a frost is forecast and it will mean you can leave them where they are and it would be easier for you neighbour! :)
Reply:I wouldn't risk it just yet, we may still get a late frost, I have known it happen on more than one occasion. Give it another couple of weeks, or until the beginning of June to be really safe.
Reply:I live in Yorkshire and i put mine up yesterday, so i think you soft souterners should be ok ;)

Just keep an eye on the forecast though and any sign of a nighttime chill, pop 'em in the greenhouse or garage.

Edit-Aha, I'm from California, the hot sunny part, so frost in May is foreign to me. I do love England though and hope to come over some day.
Reply:Yes they should be fine to put out, if any frost ( which I doubt )

only the Bizzy lizzies will really suffer because they are water based.
Reply:I have always reckoned that once we are into May, frost tender plants should be OK - I'm in Worcestershire

Does anyone know if there is a difference between petunias and supertunias?

Petunias are generally a "seed annual", meaning if they are not deadheaded they will produce seeds and stop flowering, also they usually grow in and upright but mounding pattern. Supertunia is a brand name, but a very good plant still the same, you don't have to deadhead it for it to continue to flower and it has a trailing growth habit, it's very good for hangers and window boxes. "Wave" petunias are a brand name as well and are very similar in their growth habits- just another brand.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between petunias and supertunias?
Oh YES! I just got some Supertunias before Easter and they are stunning, and so carefree. I don't know what climate you are in, but here in Houston it's hot and humid for a long time. Regular petunias don't tolerate either heat or humidity very well, but the Supertunias are doing fantastic and my next door neighbor's regular petunias are dying out by the day. In my opinion, supertunias and "wave" petunias are well worth the premium price, because they spread over a large area very quickly. My plants have grown at least an inch a day. You don't have to deadhead Supertunias, but I do anyway and I think it makes the blooms more profuse. Happy gardening!

How do I plant petunias?

For all of my plants that I pot and place on the deck (ie, not in a garden) I use a good loamy (aerated) potting soil, amend with a little miracle gro slow release fertilizer, or even better, Osmocote. I then take my little 4" potted plant, dig it into my larger pot, and water in.

Pinch out the growing tips when they reach a height of 3-4 inches to encourage bushy growth. Water regularly to establish, and thereafter wait until the soil dries out to water. Overwatering will cause foliage to yellow and the plants will eventually die. Overfertilizing will result in an abundance of foliage with few flowers. Limit supplemental feedings to one or two during the growing season. After the first flowering flush, cut the plants back to encourage a second blooming.

Petunias and Marigold love hot sun.

Here's a great site that tells all about planting and caring for your petunias: http://www.bubblesnow.net/howtopetunia.h...

How do I plant petunias?
Contact your County Agricultural Agent. They have lots of info on all kinds of plants.
Reply:you need a flower pot filled with ground, there you put the young plants. put the pot somewhere on a warm and DRY place (they like to be watered but they don´t like rain from above!!!) for example under the roof

Where can I buy some britton wild petunias.?

I have an underground stream that makes for a marsh like area that is always really wet and I wanted a flower to plant there and I really like the looks of them. If I cannot get them is there anything similar that I could use.

What do you think will happen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Like : Which 2 characters die?

Why are Harry's eyes important?

Is Harry the 7th horcrux?

What was Dumbledore's letter to Petunia about?

etc.

What do you think will happen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
Remember how Dumbledore died? He died while he was keeping Harry frozen so Harry wouldn't be seen, therefore he died protecting Harry. And why is it that Voldemort's Avada Kedavra curse failed to kill Harry when he was a baby? Because of the charm placed on him when his mother died protecting him! In my opinion, at the end of book 7, Harry will have just gotten the crap beat out of him by Voldemort, and Voldemort will be about to kill him. However, when he tries to, he will fail because of the NEW charm placed on Harry by Dumbledore dying to save him. Hopefully, Harry and his friends will have found all the horcruxes by then and destroyed them, and Voldemort will be banished forever. Harry will then have 2 lightning bolt scars.

At least, this is what I think will happen. Dumbledore had to die for a reason. What better reason than this?

EDITED to add: Remember what Dumbledore said to Snape right before he killed him? I think it was "Please....Severus..." or something like that. Perhaps he wasn't begging to live, he was begging Snape to kill him to put the new charm on Harry. And remember when Harry was chasing him and he called Snape a coward and Snape gave him the most hateful look ever? Snape cared about Dumbledore, and was absolutely outraged that he had to kill a great man like him just to protect a kid like Harry (Snape still hates Harry, even if he doesn't want to kill him), and was very offended that Harry would have the audacity to call him a coward, after Snape just made a huge sacrifice in killing one of his dearest friends.
Reply:I'm thinking there will be many deaths of favourite and not-so-favourite characters. I think one of the trio, at least two of the Weasleys, Moody, Pettigrew, Voldemort, Tonks, many other members of the Order and a number of Harry's classmates will die in the final battle.

Harry's eyes are definitely linked to his mother in some way and I'm wondering if there are a means of accessing some weapon or tool that Lily has hidden away. I don't think Harry is the seventh horcrux though.

I think Dumbledore's letter to Petunia was a threat that if she doesn't take Harry in, he'll take something away from her that he gave to her. Either he gave her money or he might even have helped her fall pregnant with Dudley since losing her comfortable life or losing her son are two things that would really frighten her.

Overall, these are my other thoughts on DH:

- the trio will return to the school, not as schoolchildren but to help protect Hogwarts from invasion.

- the final battle will take place at Hogwarts

- many Slytherins (including Draco) will stand by the Order's side and, equally, there will be a number of people from the other Houses who will support Voldemort, bringing down this idea of House stereotypes.

- Snape will be proven good and that he only killed Dumbledore on the Headmaster's own orders. Either Hagrid, McGonagall, Moody or Aberforth know this and Dumbledore will also have left behind his penseive explaining everything.
Reply:The two characters I want to die are Harry and maybe Ron or one of the Weasleys. I fully believe Harry is the 7th horcrux, and I have ever since I finished Half-Blood Prince. I've been wondering what Dumbledore wrote to Petunia, but I have yet to come up with any theories.

But what I really really really want to see is what stinkin' side Severus Snape is on! He has been my absolute favorite character since the day I read the first book (in '99). And I've been cheering him on the whole way, so I'm really hoping that first we explore some more of his past... because it looks very interesting, and I hope he's on the good side. But I have no doubts that he is, though who knows Rowling is known for her twists!
Reply:The book will also contain what harry's parents did that made them so rich. And about Harry's grandparents. J.k. Rowling also revealed that a student and teacher will be married in the next book, but not to each other. The student, though, is obviously one that has graduated already. About Snapes love life will be in this book too. The last word in the book is 'scar'. All of what i'm saying is true because J.K. Rowling herself said it in an interview.
Reply:well i hope harry dies. lol. it wouldnt really make sense if harry was a horcrux because then why would voldemort have tried to kill him all teh time? And if he was an accidental one then Voldemort would have made another and he would have 8 horcruxs...
Reply:I think JK is going to kill Harry because she said that she wants to end the series in a way that no one can continue it.

(My friend has a theory that Harry is a horcrux because he has a scar that Voldemort gave him. Since he absorbed some of Voldemort's power, he is now a horcrux.)

That's all I know, but I think if she has to kill 2 out of the 3 main characters, she'll kill Ron and Harry because without Hermione no one would know anything. Idk.
Reply:Voldomort and Snape will die.

Harry will kill them at Godric's Hollow.
Reply:char. which die-voldie,harry or voldie/anor.

harry's eyes impt cuz they're like his mum's-a muggleborn.h'fully when voldie looks into harry's eyes at final battle he'll remember abt how he was fooled by love by lily potter. harry will kill voldie w. love as a weapon.

harry may be a horcrux.not likely for me.
Reply:i was thinking about the title and what it means. Isn't where harry's parents lived called godrics hollow? i remember them mentioning it, but i cant quite put my finger on it. i havn't had a chance to reread the previous books for some time, but i was thinking that maybe the final battle between harry and voldemort will take place in this hollow, as to why its called the deathly hollow
Reply:Harry better not die that's all I've got to say about it.
Reply:there is a rumor saying j k Rowling is going to kill harry. i hope she doesn't because i want harry and Ginny to be together in the end. i think harry is the 7th horcrux. i hope the book comes out quickly because i am dying of suspense
Reply:I haven't finished reading Book 5 yet. But I'm hoping that Harry will be spared.

And if he DOES die, I could think of half a dozen ways for him to come back, so killing him off to stop the series won't do any good. Remember: Sir James Barrie killed off Captain Hook, but that didn't stop Steven Spielberg from bringing him back in "Hook".

What would be your perfect ending to the Harry Potter book series?

Mine would be, the Petunia Dursley turns out to be a witch, much to her and her family's dismay. Lilly and James Potter (and the rest of voldemorts victims) weren't actually killed, their souls were just trapped... so they come to life... and of course voldemort is killed off for good...

What would be your perfect ending to the Harry Potter book series?
My perfect ending wouldn't be all sappy, happily-ever-after. I think that would ruin the darker, almost realistic world where even the good can die that JK Rowling has done so well to establish over the past six books. I'd like a nice bittersweet ending where we see the deaths of many 'good' characters (one of the trio, at least two Weasleys, a number of the Order and a few of Harry's classmates) as well as the death of Voldemort.

I'd like to see the characters emerge into their new peaceful world saddened to have lost loved ones but joyful of the future that lies ahead. McGonagall should take over as Headmistress of Hogwarts, abolishing the school Houses (which have done nothing but divide the school), signalling a fresh beginning and the folk in Harry's year would finish school and to follow different paths the adult world, although all still connected by the war they fought. If Harry and Draco live, I want to see them shake hands (they'll never be friends but they can put their fued aside), showing that Gryffindors and Slytherins will not allow themselves to be divided by the colour of their ties.

I think I'd cry if we ended up with nauseating sap where all the 'good' characters lives, all the kids marry their childhood sweethearts and pop out half a dozen brats.
Reply:I really like your ending, except maybe for the Petunia thing, 'cause I really dont care about her and the Dursleys in general. I'd also like all the dead people to return from death, but most of all Dumbledore, the next novel is going to feel so empty without him, his advices, his serene personality.

I also dont want death neither for Harry or Ron or Hermione, and for Snape, that traitor rat, I hate him even more than Voldemort, he has to have the worst death. Then I want a really tough fight between Harry and Voldemort, and at the end, Voldemort dead of course.

Adn the main couples: Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione.

Oh, I also want the foreign students that appeared in the fourth book, during the Triwizard Tournament, all those people, Viktor, Fleur, to show up again in the last book.
Reply:i like your ending but id also add that Petunia gets a divorce but doesnt get custody of Dudley and Siruis and Dumbledore come back to life.
Reply:Since the author says that two of the main characters will die, I think that Voldermort will kill Ron because he gives his life to save Harry and Hermonie and that Harry and Hermonie end up together. At least I think that this would be a good ending.
Reply:ala Mission Impossible, Harry peels off his mask and reveals that he is really:

Gerald Ford.
Reply:Sirius comes back, Dumbledore is alive and Snape was undercover. Harry kills Voldemort and ends up with Luna or Hermione.
Reply:i think that dumbledore would come back to life and snape would be soulsucked by the dementors, and harry kills voldemort, and sirius black comes back
Reply:Harry is a hoarcrux. He will sacrifice himself so Voldey will be able to be killed. Either Ron or Neville will kill Voldey (I'm leaning towards Neville). Hermione and Ron will end up together. Snape is good.
Reply:The perfect ending to Harry Potter would be Dumbledore coming back to life, Voldemort getting killed, Harry getting together with Cho, Harry's parents coming back to life (along with all the other innocent people who died), and ending with "Happily Ever After!"
Reply:I would just like to see Harry Potter defeat Voldmort and go on to prosper in his life. J.K. Rowling has stated that she is going to kill off two more characters, and I do not want them to be Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Ginny. I want the death eaters to get what they deserve. Before Voldmort meets his demise, I want to see alot more of him.

Petunias when to plant?

It is the first day of winter here in Australia, could you please tell me when petunias will arrive in the nursery.

Petunias when to plant?
In your local nursery, petunias will begin appearing at the earliest possible planting time. They will not carry them previous to this, and if they sell them at half price or discount close to the end of the season, they will continue to grow, but they'll likely be leggy and not last just a whole long time.
Reply:First day of winter and already wishing for spring, wow. I would think that petunias will arrive in early spring. Plant only when the nights are going to be above 45F, I think that is about 6 or 7 C.

Many plants in my garden have curled, deformed, new-growth leaves - what's causing it?

it's not herbicide overspray, but it kind of looks like that. It's affecting hibiscus, obedient plant, Mexican petunia, glory bower, and sweet shrub. Not affecting daylillies, irises, fig tree, eucalyptus, herbs, phlox, ferns, azalea, or dahlias. I live in northeast Alabama.

Many plants in my garden have curled, deformed, new-growth leaves - what's causing it?
It sounds suspiciously like a virus. Possibly the "curly top virus". Check out the link below to learn more, and to better diagnose the problem, as well as find solutions.

Happy Gardening!
Reply:i dont even understand half of ur question
Reply:Molybdenum deficiency. Some plants are more susceptible to it than others.

I would like to make my own hanging baskets this year. What do I need to put in the bottom of them. Full Sun.

I normally buy geraniums and I have had wave petunias but I would like to do my own. What is the components I need to make them. Peat moss, hanging basket soil, etc..

Thank you in advance!

I would like to make my own hanging baskets this year. What do I need to put in the bottom of them. Full Sun.
dry moss. dark soil.
Reply:If you already have your baskets, you need a high peat soil blend, like pro-mix. Some Lowe's and Home Depot stores sell it. Don't use straight sphagnum peat to do your potting.. the pH is going to be too low. Pro Mix has pH buffers and better drainage than plain peat. Also, be sure your baskets have drainage holes.

I'd recommend integrating some osmocote in to your soil before planting. Hanging baskets can be difficult to feed, so take care of feeding in advance.

I know some people add hydrogel to handing basket soil to reduce their watering frequency. I don't think it's a bad idea, but it does add weight to the baskets....
Reply:Any potting soil will work as your base. If it seems too heavy, you can mix in a little bit of a seed starting mix (find this in bags right next to the regular potting soil) as it is lighter and drains water more quickly. Even though I don't use chemicals in my garden, I do mix a synthetic fertilizer (such as Osmocote) into my containers. Because they are watered so frequently and need to have lots of blooms to look good, it's almost impossible to do without a fertilizer.

Other than that, the sky's the limit. You can use any type of plants that you want. Trailing varieties, such wave petunias, million bells, bacopa, etc. look good. You can also try more unusual plants, like passionflower or flowering maples if you have a good nursery that carries them. I like to mix plants in my containers--an upright, a trailer, and a green (like ivy or sweet potato vine), but planting all one thing looks nice, too.

Don't be skimpy--most containers can hold 3 or 4 plants and will help them to fill out sooner.

Fertilize weekly with a diluted liquid fertilizer or compost tea. Enjoy!
Reply:and diapers. My nursery person told me to put a dry diaper in the bottom of my baskets. The diaper absorbs extra moisture, and then releases the moisture when needed. They also have potting soil for containers(I think the brand is Miracle Grow) its much lighter than normal potting soil and perfect for baskets

Is "deadheading" necessary with trailing petunias or are they self-cleansing?

Deadheading is beneficial to most flowering annuals because it allows the nutrients that the plant is receiving to go to the healthy parts of the plant vs the dead/weakend parts of the plant..........resulting in more blooms and fuller%26amp; more bushy plants.....you can just let mother nature do her thing - rain and wind will wipe out some of the old blooms, but it won't be as much as you can do by hand....every day would be ideal, but if you can do it every 2-3 days it will produce benefical results

Is "deadheading" necessary with trailing petunias or are they self-cleansing?
dead head them it will make room for new growth
Reply:dead head
Reply:Not necessary but looks nicer and sets more bloom faster. They love food too....

Good Plants for full sun garden in North Carolina?

I want lots of color in my front garden, but it is in full sun all day. I am going to plant some knock out shrub roses and I have a row of hawthorne in the back, it has small white flowers in May. What kind of flowering plants can I put in the garden for good bursts of color throughout the season. I prefer to have good perennial plants and then plant an annual border each year. This year we have snap dragons and petunias as a border, but it is a very large planting bed and we need more color.

Good Plants for full sun garden in North Carolina?
I love day lilies- they are cheap multiply like crazy and require little care. They come in so many different varieties that it is easy to pick some you like.

the link below is to easy to grow bulbs. I got some Lillie's from them last year and was very pleased:

http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/

Also perennial:

Shasta daisy, really easy likes the sun

Russian sage- purple likes the heat

In the annual category:

Salvias are also nice in full sun. I am a big fan of the annual red salvia you purchase at Lowe's.

Dusty miller is nice as an accent and takes no care.

Marigolds and geraniums are pretty bright.

Just some ideas, I always have fun just looking at the online gardening sites to get ideas. Happy planting, Spring is here
Reply:Wave petunias will add a TREMENDOUS amount of color and are large and showy.. Vincas are a good choice in sun as well. Marigolds will do nicely as well, Mexican heather.. All have nice color and will take the sun.
