Why are my petunias and marigolds disappearing?

All of my planters had beautiful petunias and marigolds in them and suddenly they have been plucked off. My dog killed a very large rat outside and still after that happened the last of my marigolds dissappeared. I even asked the kids if they did it and nope they didn't. Now I need to find out what flowers that are in season now I can plant that will be safe from criitters. I thought that marigolds were safe from critters or birds?

Why are my petunias and marigolds disappearing?
Moles and other rodents eat them. Get a cat and don't feed it.
Reply:yep.. rabbits, squirrels, usually marigolds are safe, but you might just have a very hungry varmint.
Reply:Maybe you have a visitor at night, such as a bunny.

What could be eating my petunias?

I don't see any bugs, but the blossoms are getting eaten. In the morning I'll check them %26amp; see little holes in the blossoms or some edges eaten away. Then by the afternoon, just a little bit of the blossom is usually left at the stalk. The leaves %26amp; stalks are left alone. And the blossoms themselves don't have any discoloration so it wouldn't seem to be a fungus, etc. And this is only happenning in my potted petunias- I have hanging Trailing Petunias hanging right above the potted ones %26amp; those are fine. I have petunias every year %26amp; have never had this problem!

What could be eating my petunias?
at our nursery in upper SC we had this problem for a while at the end of the summer and our culprit was a small caterpillar. ours were in hanging baskets and it baffled me for quite some time I think they ate and then fell onto the underlying plants, by the time I was finding then at first they were in the center of our gerber daisies...pests. Finally I found the tiniest little wormy guy on the petunia plants and found that this had to be our culprit eating at the buds. If you are looking for slugs be sure to look for glistening slime trails covered in morning dew. LOL
Reply:here in s. georgia we have palmetto bugs.aka big *** roaches.they sometimes eat my flowers and plants.
Reply:It may be ants - check for ant colony or slugs (but these would normally eat leavs as well). Get some ant powder and sprinkle it around.
Reply:I have those pesky little ants that seem to want to eat pretty much everything even the azaleas... they go after everything except for the marigolds... as much as I dislike having to do it I spray a bug killer... I have to take the cat's in for a few days and am afraid it will kill the butterflies... so I try to spray it very low and not hit the flowers...

Good luck... enjoy your flowers!
Reply:Go out a couple of times at night with a flashlight... I wouldn't be surprised if you don't find the critter responsible. Out here it would be slugs...

What was Petunia's Howler all about in Harry Potter?

I read Deathly Hallows. I must have missed it...I never saw where they explained Aunt Petunia's howler that she received. What did it mean?

What was Petunia's Howler all about in Harry Potter?
Well if I recall correctly the howler said "Remember my last, Petunia." The letter that Dumbledore left with Harry on the steps I think had nothing to do with it. I think "his last" was the letter he wrote personally to her, when she wrote a letter after Lily got accepted into Hogwarts.
Reply:Basically, Petunia knew the charm on Harry only worked when he was around family. When she took him in, Dumbledor made her promise she would always allow him to stay at their house. It was in the last book, like other people have said. :)
Reply:In the first book, Petunia got a letter from Dumbledore that said they must keep him until he turns 17 and she made a promise to do that. That's what the howler was reminding her of.
Reply:Related to a previous book, when dumbledore sent Aunt Petunia the howler telling her that she promised to keep Potter.
Reply:It was not mentioned in Deathly Hollows, it was mentioned in the Half-Blood Prince. Dunbledore sent a letter to Petunia telling her that for Harrys protection he had to stay with a blood relative since it was his mothers spell that was protecting him.
Reply:Yup, Petunia was to keep Harry Potter in the summer until he came of age.
Reply:it was about the letter that was put with harry when he was leaft at her door. that her blood helps keep him safe till he is on his own.

How do I keep my petunias alive?

I have outdoor petunias... hanging plants. I have never had these before and they are dying! HELP!

How do I keep my petunias alive?
1.) Petunias love sunshine! If you have them in the shade, better move them.

2.)The older forms (which I suspect you have) bloom briefly and the blossoms wither and drop. To keep this type of petunia blooming, you must pinch off all the spent blossom caps. Sort of a few minutes every day job. If you are too busy for this kind of plant maintenance. buy some of the new hybrid Wave petunias. These are really good performers and don' t need to be pinched back.

3.)Also, I'm a big believer in slow release fertilizer granules. Feeds gradually but regularly with every watering.

How do you get your own seeds from your petunias?

Last year I successfully grew my own marigolds from seeds taken from my garden. Can I do this with Petunias? and how?

How do you get your own seeds from your petunias?
this is what i do,,cause Petunia seeds are difficult to grow...at the end of the season when the plants are dead i stuff the dead plants back into the pot they grew in and clover them for the winter and at spring time i pull the cover off and take out the old plant making sure to shake it well before removing the old plant..they will grow back in no time this way...
Reply:they will form in little pods , where the flower was ,they are very tiny and difficult to grow from seed without a greenhouse to start them in. i mean it can be done i grow all of my garden from seed, i just like the challenge ans watching them grow.
Reply:Leave the flowers on....don' deadhead them....reduce watering so that the plant is stressed and thinks it is dying....you will get your seeds.

In Harry Potter, is Lily older or younger than Petunia?

And by how much?

In Harry Potter, is Lily older or younger than Petunia?
It was never said but I tend to believe that they were twins and that's why Petunia has so much issues because the separation from Lily was very hard for her.
Reply:thats a good question... i dont know...
Reply:I think it was mentioned before, but I can't remember. Dudley is older than Harry, though, so it's possible that Petunia is older judging from this.
Reply:it is never mentioned in the books or by rowling. but i think she is older.
Reply:it is hard to say because it has never been said but i personally think that petunia is older because she says something like "when she got her letter from that school our parents were overjoyed" usually the older sibling is jealouser than the younger child so in conclusion i think it is petunia is older than lily
Reply:Petunia is older, I don't know by how much. In HBP it's mentioned that Dudley is a month older than Harry...so that makes his birthday in June...not that it matters much.
Reply:Zombie Dumbledore is older than both of them...
Reply:of course''
Reply:i think she is younger
Reply:It doesnt matter if dudley or harry is older but i think lilly is older
Reply:I think that she is older, but I don't know for sure.
Reply:Dudley is older than Harry, though, so maybe Petunia is older judging from this.
Reply:lily is younger than petunia
Reply:I think Lily might be younger but I don't know by how much or even if I am right...

What is the best way to trim and maintain petunias?

I have some petunias growing in a pot and while they have lots of blooms, the stems are getting too long and the flowers are beginning to hang out over the sides of the pot.

What is the best way to trim and maintain petunias?
pinch them back

SALVIA AND PETUNIAS. Brand new plants. Just put them in the dirt - should I cut the tops off them?

I have heard this makes them bush out and makes a sturdier plant with lots more flowers. Also 'pinching back' for the petunias. I don't mind doing it to the petunias, but the Salvia only has that one flower on top. To cut or not to cut - that is the question.

SALVIA AND PETUNIAS. Brand new plants. Just put them in the dirt - should I cut the tops off them?
Yes...pinch the petunias back just a little....it doesn't have be too drastic...just take the main tip off.

As for the salvia...cut back the main stem to the point right under the bottom flower. It won't hurt it. It will actually help the overall health of the plant. Greenhouses/nurseries will over fertilize just so the salvia plant will have that one blooming stem so buyers can see flower color. They want quick results and don't care about a nice bushy plant. Once you cut it back you will see new growth starting with a week and it will branch out so you will have more than just than one straight up flower that you have now. If you keep deadheading the salvia flower tips it will bloom for months.
Reply:what? salvia has a bunch of little flowers at the top. not just one. leave the salvia as is, unless there's dead parts to it, then cut them off. As for the petunias, yes this technique does work, however, you also need good soil mixed with some manure to get optimum growth. The nitrogen in the manure makes plants shoot up like crazy!
Reply:Yes it does help the petunias, but I would not do it to the salvia being as it has only one on top,
Reply:always -you want the initial growth to be in the roots. this is impossible with pretty blooms that need energy.

How do i get my petunias to not die?

Every year my potted petunias die after about 8 weeks i water them and make sure they have the right amount of everything but they just die. None of my other plants r dying so why do they always die.

How do i get my petunias to not die?
I live in Texas and have had petunias survive for 3 years without dying out (we had a few very mild winters). When they started looking shabby I cut them back to the newest set of leaves on each stem. I did this in the evening, after having watered good early in the day. It was quite interesting to see how they survived each season, although they were pretty shabby looking and had become more of an experiment than anything else, when they finally died out for good.

If your petunias are in pots, you might want to move them to a place where they are only getting the early morning sun. Late afternoon sun will burn them up pretty quick.

Petunias are very easy to grow from seed. You might get more, and longer, enjoyment out of the flowers if you planted the seeds yourself and witnessed the first blooms.
Reply:Your welcome. Good luck! Report It

Reply:Are you dead heading them right after it goes by? Do you have drainage in the bottom of the pot? If there is any life left in the roots and stems, cut them back to about 2" and they should start growing again.
Reply:Well, it depends where you live. I live in south east Texas and you cannot expect them to last through the summer here. The stores sell them much later than they should. The heat here is just too much no matter what you do. Maybe you live in too hot of an area as well?

Petunia pickle bottom diaper bags?

Does anyone know how to to clean a petunia pickle diaper bag without meesing up the fabric?

It should have a care tag. If it doesn't, I'd use cold water and maybe a vary mild detergent and let it line dry

Can you plant petunias over lily bulbs without hindering the lillies?

I have heard that you can plant pansies but what about petunias? Don't petunias bloom longer than pansies? Conditions would be zone 9 with full sun.

Can you plant petunias over lily bulbs without hindering the lillies?
Yes, the lilies will grow up through the petunias without any problem. Petunias will look nice as a low ground cover and will help retain some moisture, as well as shade the ground to keep the lily bulbs cool.
Reply:Sure, you will have no problem - just try not to over-fertilize the area. The petunias like fertilizer but lillies have been knows to resent extra fertilizer and result in more leaves but fewer blooms the next time they come up. Since the petunias will take up more fertilizer, a light application should be safe to keep them blooming - just be conservative with it, bear the "stingy" character of the lilly in mind.
Reply:Yes, I think you can do this. The lilies root system is usually much deeper than the petunia's would be, and shouldn't really interfere. You may just have to water a little more.
Reply:for full sun petunias would be betyter than pansies.

Actually you could pretty much plant any annual over the lily, just be careful.

You could also try planting a perennial which would save you having to replant every year.

I have violets and forget-me-nots and perennial geraniums all growing above the lilies and the lilies jus grow up thru them.

An easy thing to do is to sprinkle seeds in the area.

Petunia Climate?

I live in Trinidad that in the Caribbean near Venezuela its really hot here and i really love petunias. The area I want to put them gets about 5-6 hours of sun I am hoping I can get a answer I would put your solutions to the test

Petunia Climate?
Petunias are SO pretty! I live in Texas, where it gets really hot in the summer (100+). I grow petunias during the spring and early summer, but they fizzle out in the heat. Maybe if you plant them in a location with less sun they would do better. I suggest you try growing petunias in a pot (or several pots) to see how they hold up to your climate before planting a large area. Good luck!
Reply:They should do really well in your climate. Be careful of the new hybrids, which don't like torrential rain. Plant them in full sun, and water well until established. When they become a bit straggly you can cut them back.

Has anyone else ever had baby petunias grow from the blooms that they deadhead?

I got a red and white petunia for free from Lowes on Mother's Day, put it in a big planter in front of our deck. It's grown like crazy! It's overflowing from the pot. I've been deadheading the blooms, just like you're supposed to, and I drop the dead blooms back into the pot. Now I've got new petunias growing next to the original one, but they're that hot pink/purple-ish color. I've talked to my mom about it and she's never seen this happen before. She's a big flower nut, and has been planting and growing flowers for ages. I'm just curious if anyone else out there has ever had this happen to them.

Has anyone else ever had baby petunias grow from the blooms that they deadhead?
this is what i do..every year when the growing season is over with i take my pots that had the patunias in them and i stuff the old plants back in the pot and cover it up for the winter, then in the spring i uncover it and pull all the weeds from it..the patunias will grow back from the seeds laying in the pots...i have pink wave that i do this too works great and saves alot of money...its called reseeding them selves good luck
Reply:Petunias just love the heat. Mine are going all over the place. I save the dead heads, plant pansies in my planters for the winter ( they are the only thing that survives the frost) and then when it heats up again around March or April I'll replant the dried seeds. I save my marigolds and zinnias too. I have flowers all over the place but have to water them everyday in this heat.
Reply:The best answer I can give for this question is that the soil (content %26amp; quality) is what controls the color of the bloom. If you re-potted the original plant in different soil than what you received it in, then maybe that is why the 'new growth' from the dead blooms are a different color.
Reply:open the dead heads and pull on the center. whats in your hand now is seeds. The easiest way to keep them is to put the whole dead head(s) into a brown bag in a cool dark place for the winter. In early spring harvest the seeds and your ready to plant.
Reply:Petunias are one of my favorite flowers, it sounds like to me that your petunia is a muticolored one, which means it will bloom various colored flowers. Petunias tend to grow new shoots too, thats why it looks like you have two different plants. Enjoy.

Who thinks Rory and Petunia are the same person?

Too much drama for me. I think they are one and the same.

That's why Petunia has so many points. She creates these alter egos. Bit weird, huh?

Does that mean multiple personalities? Would be even more weird if she didn't know it was her other "self" she was fighting with! That's deep.

Petunia took a long time to get her points and she worked for them. she also asked a lot of questions. she did not cheat her way to her level as many have admitted to doing. what alter egos has she created. not Rory emerald. what does the avatar look like for Rory Emerald a suicide girl. Kelly bundy's avatar. now not saying anything against you bundy when you read this just stating facts. you said you were rory aka kelly bundy etc but who cares. if getting levels means so much to people let them do what they want. if they feel the need to cheat who cares. what I don't like is the rude and mean quetsions and answers like this one. you don't know jack about Petunia do you?

do i pull out the flowers after they have faded or do i pinch the whole head and the flower?

Just pull the spent flowers. If the plant gets straggly you can cut it back and fertilize so it will bloom again

Do Petunia's..................?

Do better in the ground or in pots??????? I have some in plastic hanging baskets that are looking PRETTY sick as of now, but the ones in clay pots are doing ok....the ones in the ground are looking great.

I am not a petunia freak, so I just tried them this year. We live in humid and heat. Thanks!

Do Petunia's..................?
i think patunias do better in very large pots on the ground, u need to dead head them every day or every other day to keep them alive, and they need alot of food also.. i cant grow them in hanging baskits but i have some of the biggest ones i ever grew in pots and they need to be water every day
Reply:Anytime you have alot of heat, it is harder on flowers in baskets, they have little insulation from the heat. You might try to move your plant where it only gets morning sun.Planting in the ground, the soil will be cooler causing your flowers to do better. Why your clay pots are doing better then your baskets?..I don"t know unless they get less direct hot heat then the baskets.

Good luck and God Bless

Reply:I lived in Idaho all my life and petunias thrived every where.

I moved to california and find that I can only grow them in pots if it is partially shaded. Like on a patio. Right now have some on the west side and they are not happy. They like the cooler weather a bit. On the ground it is cooler. Try the north side of house.
Reply:I buy hanging baskets of petunias for my front porch every year. When it's hot out I have to water them every single morning before the sun hits in the front. I water them until water is running out of the bottom of the pot. If it's real hot out I check them in the evening after the sun is off them, and water again if necessary! Hope this helps!

Can I cut petunias so that they become bushy again?

I already pinch the dead or dying petunia so to promote regrowth, but they are in pots and also some in the ground have appeared to become to heavy or n ot as not as bushy as before, still lots of blooms through. Stems seems to become stringy looking. Where would I cut stems, so not too loosing potential for rebloom?

Can I cut petunias so that they become bushy again?
Yup. Petunias neet a good cutback every once in a while just to keep from getting too "leggy". Hack them back, feed 'em, and they'll look like new again in a couple of weeks.
Reply:You can cut them anywhere along the length of the stem, preferably just after a leaf. This will send new shoots out. Give them a good drink of fertilizer water right after to help the plants get over the shock.
Reply:You need to just keep cutting them back, even the ones that have blooms. Good luck.

How do I keep chipmonks from eating my petunias?

I had a petunia plant setting in an old chair. Each day more of the plant was eaten, until is was entirely gone. I saw a chipmonk near by, and assume that it was the destructive animal. Is there a way to keep it out without killing it?

How do I keep chipmonks from eating my petunias?
Some people swear by fox urine, which you can buy at some organic nurseries. I'd probably try a liberal dusting of cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes first.
Reply:Sometimes the scent of mothballs will keep rodents out of the garden, its worth a try if you don't have dogs who might eat them

What do they mean by pinching the ends of my petunias?

My mom's petunia's are very leggy. Mine look really good and she wants me to make hers look more like mine. Through doing some research I read that you should "pinch the ends" in order to make the limbs branch out to the sides. Only problem is that they never tell you how to "pinch the ends". What does this mean, and how do you do it??

Plus if you have any other tips on making petunias grow I'd love to hear them!

What do they mean by pinching the ends of my petunias?
Pinching literally means snipping off or breaking off manually. It sounds like a terrible thing to do, I know, but it works. I have done this many times with petunias, especially the old fashioned kind that can become quite leggy. (I have literally broken off a tip of a petunia plant with healthy blooms on it. To sacrifice a few blooms like that will reward you with many, many more flowers.)

The other [related] thing to do with petunias is to "deadhead" them or "de-head" them -- you snap off spent or withered blooms, which also promotes both branching and further flower bud production.
Reply:Pinching the ends means taking off any old or dead flowers. The more you remove them, the more the plant will flower and it won't get leggy.
Reply:to "pinch off" means to use your fingernails to remove the part you want gone.

You can use garden nippers... but sometimes its just easier to use your fingers.
Reply:I love petunias and think its wonderful ,all the new colors that are available now, this year i found some beautiful pale yellow with pink edging and a silvery lavender id never seen before.

if you work with petunias much you ,ll have noticed that their stems will grow longer and hang over which can be nice for a hanging pot that has other bushy type plantings but in a ground container or border you might prefer them to be bushier.

you do this by (pinching) I start this early when i first get them by pinching off the ends of the longest stems, this causes the plant to put out more growth to the sides and middle of the plant making it fuller.but if you start later,s it okay too ,just cut or pinch back the longest stems, the bad part is that when you start later you can see the blooms you re cutting off.its sad.

but you will have a healthier looking plant. less scraggly .

good luck%26gt;%26lt;%26gt;

oh! i almost forgot.I always remove the dead flowers, pinch them off right behind the flower head or pull the dead petals and they should slide right out.
Reply:You pinch off the tip of the center branch, where it is the tallest. You literally break if off. This stops it from growing upward %26amp; forces it to grow outward, instead.
Reply:There are different types of petunias... I don't know what they are all called, but I do know there is one kind commonly called "barnyard" that comes up scraggly no mater how much you pinch it. I got ahold of some this year, I have two hanging baskets, and two planters, the first bunch of petunias I bought are all scraggly in the planters, and barely there, but the ones in the hanging baskets rite above are full and beautiful. Pinching your petunias means removing the flowers as soon as the blooms droop... you keep it from seeding by doing this, and you are rewarded with a nice full lush plant (unless you are unlucky and get some barnyards!!!) Just grab the little stem of the flower with your thumb and pointer finger and pinch it off were the stem meets the main stalk, trying not to pinch off the little leaflets there.
Reply:You just need to pinch out the top growing tips of the stems. The new growth of the plant develops at the tips so by pinching the small leafy buds out at the top the plant starts to grow lower down and bushes out. With some plants this helps produce more flowers. Also a good feed every couple of weeks will hap, something like miracle grow :)
Reply:I read you can cut them short when they get really long and have tried it and it does work.

What is the name of the small petunias I see in hanging baskets and pots?

These flowers are smaller than the usual petinuas. Only about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. I often see them in a dark pink. Are these a variety of petunia or some other type of flower? Where can I buy some?

What is the name of the small petunias I see in hanging baskets and pots?
They are called calibrachoa. You should be able to find them at any decent garden center in the spring.'Million Bells',is only a patent name, from the company 'Proven Winners'.This is the definitive answer, trust me.
Reply:they are called hybrid petunias, u can find them everywhere
Reply:It may be a dwarf variety of petunia, or a vinca (perwinkle), which resembles an impatient. It may also be a type of tuberous begonia. You didn't specify what region you live in (zone).
Reply:I have seen smaller varieties of petunia but its hard to say without seeing a photo. If it looks like a petunia, then maybe it is. If you have a photo will you post it?
Reply:They are called Million Bells.

What Mild Insecticide can I use for petunias?

I want to use something that would get rid of little insects that eat on the leaves of my healthy petunia plants.

But is there some alternative solutions rather than dangerous chemicals?

What Mild Insecticide can I use for petunias?
The soap thing is one way. I've used insectidal soap mixed with rubbing alcohol with excellent results. It takes care of a larger number of pests than just the soap.

If you can find rotenone, it's a less hazardous approach than most of the chemical stuff and works very well also.
Reply:buy some pure ivory soap liquid. in a spray bottle mix 1tsp per quart. be prepared to apply twice a week until the pest are gone. you may also have to apply the day after a rainfall, so plan accordingly. the addition of a 1/2 tsp of reg. vegetable oil will provide additional protection and cling the soap to the leaves.

Hope it helps.
Reply:We use a bit of garlic juice, a couple drops of dish soap and fill up with water in a spray bottle. Works great, I've never had insects brought in to the house on the plants from outside with this. Also good for mites on indoor plants, and any plants.
Reply:fill a spray bottle 2/3 water and top off with liquid soap.

What did Dumbledore mean when he sent Aunt Petunia A Howler that said "Remember my last, Petunia"?

it'll be explained in the last book. :) i'm sure there's more to what we know about the howler. :D

What did Dumbledore mean when he sent Aunt Petunia A Howler that said "Remember my last, Petunia"?
he told her to remember the last letter, and to take care of harry.
Reply:Jo Rowling actually answered this question on her website.

Dumbledore was just reminding Petunia not to forget the last letter he left her asking her to care for Harry. He wanted to make sure that she didn't allow Vernon to throw Harry out onto the street where the blood protection would leave him vunerable.

Potter fans were hoping there was more to this than there actually was but that's how Jo works. She's a crafty woman. :)
Reply:The last note he had ever sent her had asked her to take care of Harry. She hadn't done that, and you know she's scared of wizardry. so it woke her up a bit.
Reply:I think Dumbledore made an 'Unbreakable vow' with Petunia Harry, just like Snape does with Narcissa in HBP, so that Petunia will always be bound to protect Harry, but when she was about to throw Harry out of the house, Dumbledore probably thought that she should be reminded of this.
Reply:Dumbledore stuffed Petunia up the dirt box, that made her howl
Reply:Well, there are many different theories to this, but I think that he may be referring to the letter that was left with Harry on thier doorstep explaining the situation that Harry was in.

***YAY FOR HARRY POTTER FANS EVERYWHERE!!!***

=)
Reply:It was to remind her of his first letter to her. Remember in the first book on the doorstep Harry had a letter with him. The letter stated that as long as he stayed under a roof of his mothers blood he couldn't be harmed. And Petunia was scared to death of magic and knew that if she didn't let him stay with her she would pay dearly.
Reply:he was telling her to remember his last letter. that also means that there were more letters before the one that was left with baby harry at their door.

Petunia Hybrid?

What is the difference between a Petunia and a Supertunia Hybrid and what would happen if I collected seeds from the latter? Would they be plain Petunia's?

Petunia Hybrid?
the difference is in the way they grow, and the amount of blooms they produce! the supertunia being the best of course! if u are fortunate enough to get seeds from either one then count ur stars cuz alot of breeders will make em sterile, bu tif ur lucky enough to have one that will produce seeds... then it's hard to tell what kind they will be due to the fact that the bees that pollinated it in the first place most likely cross-pollinated it from a different one... from ur other plants or someone elses nearby! hope this helps...

Can petunia's grow in all shade?

Petunias LOVE the sun and dont do real well in the shade.

Can petunia's grow in all shade?
petunias can grow in the shade but they dont do well you need shade flowers to grow in the shade like impatients, hosta's,dead nettle, bell flowers columbine, foxglove there are many great flowers that do well in the shade!
Reply:Generally, I think not. They like full sun. But nowadays, there could be a rare variety that likes shade.
Reply:They can, but they don't do that well. They will have smaller blooms and tend to get really long, lanky flower stems. If you need a flower that looks good in the shade, try a Impatience. They come in a variety of colors and grow very well in the shade, in fact, if they get too much sun, they can wilt and in some cases die.

How do Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon spoil Dudley [Harry Potter's Cousin] ?

In the Harry Potter movies, Aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon are always giving Harry's cousin Dudley everything he wants, and taking his side no matter what, how does this show that they are spoiling him please explain. Best answer gets 10 points.

How do Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon spoil Dudley [Harry Potter's Cousin] ?
because they hate harry because he's lucky because he is a wizard. {and lily which was aunt petunias sister and harrys mom was liked better by the parents. its in the first movie} Dudley gets everything he wants because he parents like him.
Reply:Whenever a parent gives a child whatever he/she wants to the point when they start screaming when they don't recive something they want. An example of the harry potter thing you mentioned, was in the first movie on Dudley's birthday he gets-I think- 37 presents. When Uncle Vernon tells him this Dudley throws a fit says last year I got 38!!!!!!!!! Then Uncle Vernon says he will buy him 2 more presents. I hope that answers you question! :)
Reply:Movie: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Scene: When Harry sleeps in the closet, and Dudley has a huge room with toys he doesn't even use

Movie: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Scene: When Dudley gets to eat EVERYTHING he wants and be a little brat, when Harry has to do the dishes and eat after everyone else
Reply:They favor him, they hate Harry. Isn't that like spoiling him?
Reply:How about in the first one, they gave dudley like 36 presents in the second scene of the movie and dudley got mad because last year he got 37 so his parents said, oh well we're going to get 2 more while we're out. That's spoiled... They fall in to his every whim and need. i guess i see what you mean we don't actually see what the presents are... but i still see him as spoiled his parents do everything for him.
Reply:first scene
Reply:in the first harry potter dudly's birthday was coming up and they get him like 165 presents last year and this year only like 163 or something and dudley got REALLY mad so they went and got him 2 more after the zoo even though the ones this year were even bigger and more expensive.

dudley got a nice big room while harry was under the stairs.

dudly NEVER had to do any chores.
Reply:You're kidding, right?

Counting his birthday presents. Breaking his things and still getting more, more, more.

Was this a rhetorical question, or do you really not understand?
Reply:movies are gay. go read the books

they are much more explicit in how dudley is spoiled - buying him a racing bike, real air rifle, 2 bedrooms, 36 birthday presents plus additional ones.

and how his parents let him wander the streets and smoke. they try to stamp the magic out of harry by keeping him as down trodden as possible.

its kinda sick if you ask me.
Reply:Well, they buy him whatever he wants, buy him tons of presentson his birthday, and can't even say happy birthday to Harry
Reply:They give him everything he wants whether he has asked for it or not and he is never spanked or slapped(which he needs to be).
Reply:The movies actually do a very poor job of showing how they spoil Dudley. The books go into far greater detail to the horrible treatment of Harry and the pedestal that Dudley is put on.

In Harry Potter OotP Petunia received the Howler. Was that ever clarified?

It says something along the lines of "Remember my last, Petunia." And it never says exactly who sent it. I can't recall them clearing this up in HBP, and I don't remember much from OotP, I'm rereading it now and just came across this line.

Who was it from? What did it mean? How much about the Wizarding community is she attune to?

If you'd like to speculate, or confirm for me that would be good. Or if you have any links to sites that address this particular Aunt Petunia topic.

If you think it's going to be in the 7th book don't say anything. I'd appreciate it if nothing about that book is said here.

((Recent information. I found one pretty interesting thing, but it was from a few years ago.))

In Harry Potter OotP Petunia received the Howler. Was that ever clarified?
RAB is Regulus Black. Dept. of Mysteries isn't that important to the novel really. And yes, Hagrid does live on. He's around 19 years later when the epilogue finishes.

Here are the legit spoilers... I'll try to be a bit vague.

1. The final battle takes places in The Great Hall of Hogwarts. What you see on the US book cover is that scene. The orange sky is the magical ceiling of the Great Hall, and the shadows behind Voldy and HP are the people watching the duel.

2. One of the Weasleys gets murdered. Another one is maimed.

3. The Deathly Hallows refer to three magical objects. Two of which, we have seen greatly in the previous novels. I'll name one... Harry's Invisibility Cloak. Now you know why JKR always made a hint that there was something very unique about it.

4. Harry and Herimone visit Godric's Hollow at Christmas time.

5. Yes, Sirius Black is officially dead. He did not survive the Veil. He is not in another dimension. He is gone, yet you will see him again briefly.

6. Kreacher is relevant to one of the Horcrux's. He loved and admired his master Regulus Black.

7. The book open's up with Voldermort and his Deatheaters camping out at the Malfoy manor house.

8. Hedwig is killed by a Deatheater when Harry is trying to flee Privet Drive.

9. Dudley, before fleeing for safety and protection, thanks Harry for saving him from the Dementors in book 5.

10. Snape knew Aunt Petunia when they were very young. You could say, he is the reason she has a great dislike and fear for magic.

11. Dumbledore has many dark family skeleton's in the proverbial closet. He also has many regrets. He also lied when asked what he saw when looking into the Mirror of Erised.

12. Voldermort has learned to fly by his own power.

13. Snape's patronous indicates whether he is good or bad to the reader and what his true reason for his actions are...
Reply:I'm not really sure, but I that was never really mentioned. I think that still remains a mystery. And yes, I have read that part of the book before.
Reply:OMG peapatchisland your everywhere!!!

the howler is from Dumbledore who reminds petunia harry has to be able to stay at her house because he is safe there because of the bond Lily made. Voldermort cant reach him there.
Reply:it says in ootp that dumbledore sent it
Reply:it was du,bledore he tells him when there in his office at the end of the 5th
Reply:NOT A SPOILER, I swear. I think spoilers are evil. This was in Book 5.

Dumbledore sent the howler (page 836 U.S. edition).
Reply:the howler was from dumbledore. when they state "remember my last, petunia." it meant the last letter he wrote to her, that said that she had accepted to take care of harry because only the blood relation would be able to protect harry.
Reply:well no it has never been...but soon to be when the next book comes out. so yeah. you and me both have been wanting this answered.
Reply:It was from Dumbledoor.

Dumbledoor made Aunt Petunia promise to let harry live there for harry's own protection, because Aunt Petunia had his mother's blood, which created a "shelter" and as long as he called that place home, it would keep him safe. This ends when he comes of age at 17.

When Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia were about to kick him out, that was when Dumbledoor sent the Howler.
Reply:This never happened in the Order movie. They left this out along with many other things. (Note, light book 5/4 Harry Potter spoiler below)

They also left of S.P.E.W, most of Kreacher's scavenger and lots of Grimald place stuff. Sirius was a lesser character at the begining as well.

Who was it from?

Dumbledore.

What did it mean?

It meant that Dumbly and harry's mother had put magic on harry to help him. In short, because lily died to save harry, if he lived in a blood realtives place he could call home, then he could not be touched there by you-know-who.

How much about the Wizarding community is she attune to?

She doesn't know the current times, but knows that askaban is bad, deamontors are also horrifying and all about You-know-who

In Harry Potter 5, what does Aunt Petunia's Howler mean?

The one from Dumbledore that said "Remember my last." What did it mean?

In Harry Potter 5, what does Aunt Petunia's Howler mean?
"Remember my last, Petunia", which Rowling has confirmed is referring to the note he left with one-year-old Harry on their doorstep. This prompts Petunia to override Vernon's decision and allow Harry to stay.
Reply:It was about what Dumbledore had told Petunia about when Harry was given to her. He had told Petunia that Harry could only be safe with her in her home so she needed to keep Harry under her protection so that he would be safe.
Reply:dumbledore was saying to remember what he wrote in the letter that he gave her when he first brought harry to her doorstep. it said something about harry being safe there and even though petunia hadnt been talking to lilly, she probably found a soft spot for her sister's only child. when vernon wants to kick harry out in the 5th movie, petunia doesn't try to stop him until the howler comes and she remembers what she promised dumbledore, and she must keep him safe.

hope this helps! =)
Reply:It means remember the last thing he said to her (to treat Harry well).
Reply:i think it means dumbledore's last letter, the one he left with baby Harry when he was left on the doorstep
Reply:i dont read those books or watch the movies so i wouldnt know
Reply:well in the books they dont really explain it that great. but basically it means that she is to remember y they took harry in the first place and the letter that they first gave the dursleys

good question

What's with Aunt Petunia at the beggining of the Order of the Phoenix?

I know she's not a squib, and she's not a witch. But something smells in there. Do you think JKR meant something when she wrote that? Is it so important, that the film producer will keep the scene?

What's with Aunt Petunia at the beggining of the Order of the Phoenix?
I know that JKR has stated that "there is more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye." And, we are supposed to learn more about her in book 7.

I suspect that there will be some of the Aunt Petunia scene at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix movie (to set up her role in book 7) but I'd bet it will be condensed down and much will be cut. The emphasis will likely just be how much she understood when she agreed to take Harry in, as far as the possible danger to herself, Dudley %26amp; Vernon. Also, that it is what kept Harry safe all through his childhood until age 17 while not under Dumbledore's supervision and protection at Hogwarts.
Reply:Are we sure she's not a squib?
Reply:Something has to come up or else I don't think they'd include it. It'll be interesting to see what's up.
Reply:well we defenitly know that is very important, and in the 7th book were gonna find out alot more about petunia. we know that dumbeldore keeps in contact with her. have u been to the harry potter lexicon? its answers alot of questions...go to it. hplexicon.com
Reply:I doubt they'll keep it, seeing as the movies have cut plenty of other very relevant material from the novels.

Pity those who are fans of the movies but haven't read the books: they have barely a hint of what the story is actually about.

Dianthus and Petunia plants......?

Hello i just bought a small pots with tiny cute flowers, labeled PETUNIA AND DIANTHUS, i am inspired withe these, and i want to keep them bloom and keep on flowering until the good season for gardening is ove, Is there any thing i can put on to them to continue their blooming, and keep them flowers after flowers.of course aside from the fertilizer that we all know to keep them healthy.?

next question is why my grass lawn has a flying small insect atop of some portions of my grass.why is that and will they harm my grass?how can i swift them away?thnx God Bless.

Dianthus and Petunia plants......?
The first thing you need to do is to take them out of their small pots, and put them into larger pots -- for example, you can put about 4 plants together in a pot that is about 12" in diameter. Use good quality potting soil in the pot. Add slow release fertilizer to the pot (12-12-12) -- make certain that it is slow release, or you can kill the plants. Put you pot outdoors in a sunny place, as both petunias and dianthus like the sun. Water regularly -- depending on how much heat and rain you get, you may need to water your pot every day. If you plants start to look droopy, then they are not getting enough water. After about two months, you will then need to to start fertilizing every two weeks with a water soluble fertlizer (20-20-20 is pretty standard).

Can't help you with the insect!
Reply:Try dead-heading...once the flowers wilts and dies pick it off, the plant will continue to flower because its trying to make seeds so when you pick off the old flower its thinks its been eaten or something and makes a new one.

Which are the best varieties of Petunia?

these varieties must be interesting and new

Which are the best varieties of Petunia?
You are asking a subjective question. What I think is best is not what someone else will agree. When a NEW variety is developed, those who market such items pick what they THINK is "best" for what-ever reason(s) they base their opinion. Best is categorized into color, size, resistance to things, etc. and all of those things combined. What do you like? Look at the 2007 offerings by the seed companies such as Gurney's and make a selection. My personal preference for petunias with a trailing tendency, F-ones, with large blossoms in a wide selection of color from solid to stripes because that is how I decorate the patio with them in containers.

In Harry Potter, what is the howler that was sent to Petunia about?

what does the howler means by "remember my last"??

who sent it??

In Harry Potter, what is the howler that was sent to Petunia about?
Dumbledore sent it to Petunia to remind her of his last letter and all that they discussed in it!! he was reminding her of the consequences of what would happen if she threw harry out. They discussed it years ago when harry was left on their doorstep!!
Reply:albus dumbledore sent it because the dursleys promised him they would take care of harry until he is 17
Reply:it was reminding her that harry has to stay with the durlseys untill he is 17, so that the protection will protect him from voldermort
Reply:"Remember my last" is usually interpreted as "Petunia, remember the last letter I sent to you." Most people believe the last letter Dumbledore, the sender of the Howler, sent to Petunia was the one left on their doorstep with Harry on the night Lily and James Potter were killed.
Reply:dumbledore.
Reply:dumbledore sent it saying that she should remember in his last letter, the onehe left with harry when he was on the doorstep, that it saidd that he had to stay there until he was 17 because he was protected by a magical spell, and he and she would be in great danger if he didnt.

(dumbledore would endanger petunia)

What nutrients does a petunia need?

Here's a link to a site which tells you lots about growing petunias.

The Muse

What nutrients does a petunia need?
A balanced feed of NPK should do the trick. If you want more flowers go for the K which is potassium. K encourages flowering.

You can use potash (K) which is wood ash, but don't use fresh wood ash. Let it sit around for a few weeks open to the elements.

N = Nitrogen

P = Phosphate

K = Potassium

How do you like your Petunia Pickle Bottom Touring Tote (diaper bag)?

no, they are over rated and overpriced. trust me, there are plenty of things you will need for the baby...use the money for something better.

***EDIT***

No, I don't but my sister in law did. It was super cute, but frayed along the edges quickly. There are better choices...I wouldn't pay $200 for a purse for myself (or any piece of clothing for that matter), let alone something to lug diapers around. Best of luck!

Bridemaid dresses in petunia color. Who is the designer?

I went to a bridal store last night and found the perfect bridesmaid dress that I thought was Wtoo, which is the designer I want. Only... to go home and realized that Wtoo doesn't make a dress in petunia (hot pink)

Does anyone know who might make this color dress? The same designer also makes a green called celedon.

Or is it possible that Wtoo calls their "petunia" color something different now?

Reply:They could call it a different name now...I was planning my wedding back in 2006 and postponed it due to becoming pregnant with our daughter. We are now having our wedding in July and come to find out my bridesmaids dresses that I had bought my girls in 2006 has become discontinued. I have changed a girl in my wedding party so now I am probably going to have to get new dresses. My color is Platinum (silver) and I am finding that each and every designer has a different name for this color.

Plug plants.petunia, impatience,i have no green house but have very wam shed with small window. can i grow on?

Plants need light in order to survive let alone grow. That being said, if you can add light to the shed, you should be able to use it.

I grow my seedlings in the darkest corner of my basement. I made a grow shelf system and added lights and it works great.

I bought a open wire shelving unit and two sets of florescent lights for each shelf and hung them over the lower shelf. I keep the lights really low, just an inch or two, over the plants and they grow just fine. They do make some broad spectrum lights specifically for indoor growing that will fit regular flourescent shop lights, but they are expensive and I have done fine without them.

So, yes--you can use your shed provided you have access to electricity and are willing to install some lights.

Plug plants.petunia, impatience,i have no green house but have very wam shed with small window. can i grow on?
Absolutely ,just get some cheap floresents and it will b fine.

Would a spider plant choke a petunia?

no

Would a spider plant choke a petunia?
I have seen spider plants and petunias in the same basket or pot many times; while spider plants get big, they do so slowly. Petunias can be aggressive growers too, so they are a good match for spider plants. Just be sure that you keep the basket moist, or the spider plant WILL take over.

Do you think Petunia in Harry Potter is a witch?

I have a theory that Harry's Aunt Petunia is a witch. Why else is her house so sparkling clean? I think it will be revealed in the next book. J.K Rowling said this about Petunia for Harry Potter 7: "..there is a little bit more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye...She is not a squib, although that is a very good guess. Oh, I am giving a lot away here. I am being shockingly indiscreet."

So what do you think? If you think she is a witch, why do you think she condemns magic so much(or pretends to)?

Do you think Petunia in Harry Potter is a witch?
She's not a witch,

i thought that once when JK Rowling said something along the lines of

petunia won't perform magic in the series.....

i thougth that she was hinting that she could

but then i went o jk rowling's website and in her rumors section some one asked if Aunt Petunia will start exhibiting magical tendencies?

she said

"No, she won't. Aunt Petunia has never performed magic, nor will she ever be able to do so."

sorry, i was crushed too.

see for youself
Reply:maybe coz she is harry's mom's sister.she ought to be. that shouldnt come as a surprise,i guess.
Reply:no ,she is not a witch...I am sure
Reply:I don't know, but that is something to consider for the story. Harry's aunt Petunia may be suppressing any magic she might posess in order to appear "normal" If she is a witch, she may also be somewhat of an embarrassment to the magic community, whereas her sister, Lily was so admired.

Dwarf Mexican Petunia can it be replanted by cuttings? If I break of a stem can will it root in a pot?

Q: Can I grow it in a pot, put it outdoors during the summer, and bring it indoors during the winter? Any info you have on these lovely plants will sure be helpful.

A: The roots are not extensive, but it spreads like crazy. You will also want it to generate more plants (which it will do on its own) so plant it in a pot that can support them.

Full sun. It seems to grow in any type of water or soil conditions as long as it is well drained. Bring it indoors before the temp gets below 45-50 in the fall.

Dwarf Mexican Petunia can it be replanted by cuttings? If I break of a stem can will it root in a pot?
yes you can take cuttings.you need to clip a new or young branch, best is to get a new .stem from the old one.one that branches off. dip it in root tone, keep the soil damp amd keep the cuttings above the freezing temperature

A hanging petunia plant I bought yesterday now has small ants in it. How do I get rid og them/?
go back to the nurserey and tell them about your problem. they should give you somethink that will not harm your plant, but get rid of the ants
Reply:Put it in a sealed trash bag. Bring it back before they infest your home. Get your $ back and shop some where else.
Reply:I've always had luck with ant stakes. they are poisonous to ants. but I think returning it is a good idea too.

I have a hanging bskt with Ramblin Petunia's in it. They look dead, what can I do 2 bring them 2 life again?

They were blooming a couple of days ago and looked wonderful. Now they look completely awful! What can I do?

I have a hanging bskt with Ramblin Petunia's in it. They look dead, what can I do 2 bring them 2 life again?
Get a pair of cutters, and cut back all the dead head flowers. They are easy to spot, you can see what ones are good and those that aren't.

Check the soil, is it too wet, or too dry. If too dry, water. With outdoor plants, they dry out quickly and depending on the size of the pot, may need to be watered daily.

But some liquid fertilizer, there are dozens available, get one for flowers, and follow the instructions.

Your petunias, will soon come back to health.
Reply:have you been watering them properly? the sad fact is that if they are dead nothing will bring them back.
Reply:Get some good manure preferably cow-dung manure ,make sure the colour is quite dark.Mix 2 parts of mud and 2 parts of manure well remove top 1 inch soil from the hanging basket and put in this mixture.Cut the dead heads. If you find it difficult to water it, hang a water pot at a slightly higher level ,tie a thread to a stone put it in this water pot and bury the other end of the thread deep in mud in the hanging basket.Find out how much sun they need and place them accordingly. You can also put just a few(3/4)grains of urea in a big tumbler of water and mix it well, then put in a few spoons daily for a week.

Talking to the plants helps:)Its about caring for them.So when you do all this you will surely feel like checking on it more. Why dont you put a few more hanging baskets with new plants. You seem to just love flowers etc.I am sure you will have a great garden some day.

How long does it take for a petunia to mature?

That all depends on the variety and the growing conditions. In a very warm area they may mature more quickly. Or if they are a variety from Alaska say there growing season could be very short. Check out these sites for more info.

depending on the variety...from seed to flower, about 110 days.
