The baskets are going to be mainly full of annual flowers. Petunias, bacopa, calibrachoa. They are around 12" deep. I also have some that are , I think 12". They are the hanging baskets that you see most ofter in department stores and nursuries, usually green. I live in zone 8.
How much osmacote do I put into a 18" hanging basket?
You can't really say exactly, just by zone and species. (Zone mostly refers to temperatures.)
I'd put a little extra in hanging baskets, especially if they drain freely -- as compared to ones with a catchment. There really is no one type of hanging basket... is it literally a basket, eg. made of fiber?
Also, what sort of soil will you be using? I prefer to use premixed potting soil for container plants, which often comes with fertilizer already in there.
That said, annuals are pretty hard to burn, especially if you get lots of rain and your baskets drain. But if you fertilize them too much, they can get leggy.
In the end, the only ways to get the perfect combination are trial and error or local experience. Have you tried looking up your local cooperative extension? These are educational facilities dedicated to helping all sorts of gardeners, and they will have location-specific information.
Reply:It's hard to overfertilize using osmacote....I wouldn't exactly " fill " the baskets with it, but since ur in zone 8, u have a long growing season. I would add maybe 5 or 6 tablespoons per 12" X 12" basket - and mix well with the soil. important to water BEFORE and after using. I live in zone 5 and really " jack" the soil in my pots with osmacote cause I want a good show in a short amount of time. good luck....
Reply:Use 1- 2 tablespoons of osmocote scattered around the soil of the basket. Do not let the osmocote sit on the plant, make sure it's on the soil. Also, I would suggest a soluble fertilizer along with the osmocote. We use both osmocote and peters at my greenhouse.

Reply:I think a tablespoon would be enough. Maybe two. (5 or 6 sounds wasteful).
The larger boxes do have good directions for a variety of uses.
I've always just sprinkled a bit on the surface.

Reply:All of those plants are pretty greedy annuals, and all time release fertilzers work best when dug into the soil. If you are making up the basket yourself, put about twice what they recommend as they never do last as long as they say they do on the label.
If the pot is already made up by the store, you will slow down their growth more by digging it in, so just put it on top. I'd put about three times what was recommended on the label to start, and in about half the time that they say they last, I'd again put about 2 times what they say.
This is potentially wasteful, but it is unlikely to burn your plants, and it is a quick and lazy way to get some spectacular color with minimum effort. As long as there's sun the calibrochoa will bloom madly no matter what you do, but you will need to pinch the petunias back with this much fertilzer. I'm not sure the bacopa will be able to keep up with the other two plants.

I need to know what type of flowers to plant in window boxes. I have 5 window boxes under the house eaves that don't get natural rain water. I am a bad waterer so I need something that can go several days without water. I have tried wildflowers, petunias, dwarf sunflowers, and marigolds. No luck with those. I is mostly sun in NC. Any ideas?

Go to your nursery %26amp; pick up a small packet of med. sized soil polymers. mix them into the soil of the window boxes at the rate the package suggests. water the soil well, every day for 3 days before you plant. Water again the day you plant, and if you miss a few days, no biggy.
The polymers look like grains of rock salt when dry. Wet, each will swell to size of a dime holding water in reserve for the roots to use for days. As they dry out the slowly shrink, add water again %26amp; poof.
You should get twice the time between normal waterings with the use of the polymers.
Just in case you still want some of my ideas for your boxes (with or without polymer use) here are a few ideas.
Some will hang over the side, some bushier with color. All get along without alot of water ONCE ESTABLISHED! That means for the first week or two, YOU have to make sure they get water to give them a start.

It's been about a week, i can see little seedlings growing out of the soil already. now i only loosely wrap the pot up with a huge translucent plastic bag. I read from the instructions that it is to keep the moisture in. I have tried seeds planting many times and failed. Most of the time, many many seedlings grows out but they just die in their original containers one by one after one or two months. Sometimes they grow quite big but died after i transfer them to separate pots. I use fertile packet soil for seeds growing. I keep the pot on the corridoor, away from direct sunlight, but it can get quite hot to 30 degress celsius. I live in tropical country Singapore, high temperature and humid air. Plants i grow are like petunia and sweet william, supposedly easy to grow. It's very depressing. Please help.

Or did they just live in a house that had the protective enchantments of wizards? If they were forced to live and interact with wizards for almost a year, how do you think it went? Do you think either Petunia or Vernon could have changed in their thinking after that?

How long will it take for my window box plants to grow and are they growing quickly?
I put fish blood and bone in the soil and planted them on monday and i think they have noticeably increased in size already my neighbour even commented on them. I have trailing petunias, trailing fusia and trailiing pelargoniums.

Does anyone have advice on how to keep flowers in a flower box alive?
Hi! I have petunias, geraniums and sweet potatoe vines in a flower box right outside my window. It's in an area with heavy sunlight and a good amount of heat. I try to water them every day, but they always seem to dry out! Is there a trick to keeping them alive and well? Without overwatering?
Does anyone have advice on how to keep flowers in a flower box alive?
Proper drainage is important. If the soil is too dry, it could be that either there is too much drainage, wrong type of soil, or too much heat. Since we are in the middle of the summer months, my bet is that it may be a combination of all three reasons. Check the drainage holes. If the flower box is one that sits on a ledge, you may need to put a container underneath to prevent all the water from quickly running out. Second, check the soil. If the soil is not absorbing the water properly, it can also be adding to the problem. Invest in some new potting soil. You can tell fresh soil in the way it absorbs the liquid. It acts like a sponge. It may be because the old soil has lost its nutrients. Lastly, in the summer it is very important to water plants regularly and more frequently because heat will cause the water to evaporate faster.
Reply:Make sure you drill holes in the bottom for good drainage. I heard on TV to put the insides of a babys diaper in the bottom to help hold moisture. I have never tried it.

How can I get rid of these beetles that are eating my plants?
I have these beetles in my garden that are black in color with this soft rainbow colored shell on top that are eating my basil plants and petunias ect... They leave this skeleton effect on the leaves and I can't seem to get rid of them. There are a lot of them too. I don't want to kill my plants with sprays and I want to be able to eat my basil instead of the beetles eating it! Thanks for the help.

They are a plastic bag shaped like a funnel with a pheromone lure. The bugs go in, can't come out. Boy does it attract them!

What should I do about a baby bunny eating my flowers?
I have the tiniest baby bunny living in my front flower bed. It is eating my black eyed susans and petunias. What should I do about it? I'm not sure if it is normal for a baby bunny to be on its own already... maybe momma deserted it?!?

Also consider putting some other vegetable greens, or rabbit pellets (avalible anywhere pet supplies are sold) and water out for the cute little bunny, you can actually train him to come and eat what and where you want him to!

Once a rabbit has found a food source, it will continue to eat that food source it's entire life. The only way to fix the problem is to trap it and relocate it to another area, or kill it. You don't seem to be a rabbit stew kind of girl, so I would suggest calling the city and ask them to bring a live trap by your house. Most citys will loan you a live trap at no charge. When they catch the rabbit, they will take it to a park and release it.

How do I get rid of earwigs in my potted plants outdoors?
My potted plants outside were pretty dry. When I poured water in them a bunch of earwig bugs ran out of them. Most of the plants are petunias. Is there anyway I can try to get rid of them, or should I just dispose the plants? Thanks very much for any suggestions.

Don't throw those petunias away-you can help control the earwig infestation in these ways:
Start with fresh potting mix in your containers each spring and keep the entire area clean of any debris where they can hide. Earwigs feed at night; they hide in crevices and cracks of patio furniture and decking as well as in soil during the day. Even the drain holes under your containers can become hiding spots.
Adults overwinter in your soil and emerge in spring when the female lays eggs just beneath the soil surface. She will stay right there until the eggs hatch, then tends her little pinchers until they can fend for themselves. She then leaves to lay more eggs while the first group starts eating your plants. What a system!
If you are fast enough to catch them of guard, they can be eliminated with insecticidal soap. Otherwise, try trapping by giving them a hiding spot you can destroy. Rolled up newspaper, a small tube or paper towel rolls, anything that can be picked up and discarded daily. They will stay inside these items, where if you use something that can be lifted off them, will make them scatter. Canned cat tuna makes a good bait.

I have these beetles that are black with these soft rainbow colored shell on top, that are eating my basil plants and petunias ect... Hello Y/A friends! I bought Non-stop orange tuberous begonias this past spring and I've heard you can store them for winter (In WI) and they will grow back next year. Can someone tell me how to do this correctly? Also looking for ideas in red, white and blue shade tolerant flowers for next spring. Would petunias do OK? They will get maybe 3-4 hours of sunlight daily. Thanks!

To prepare the Begonia tubers for dormancy, gradually reduce watering and stop fertilizing at the end of August. Some gardeners may choose to remove any flower buds that form in September to encourage dormancy and the storing of energy in the tuber.
Dig Begonia tubers when the foliage starts to yellow, or after the first killing frost. Cut the stems to about five inches, and allow the tubers to cure (dry) indoors at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, until the remaining stem pieces are dry and loose or approximately 2 weeks. Pull off stems and any roots or soil, but don't wash the tubers.
Store the tubers in a perforated plastic bag, sack or box filled with peat moss or vermiculite in a cool, dark place. The ideal storage temperature range is 4°C (40°F) to 10°C (50°F).
Impatiens will give you red and white shade tolerant flowers. Purples are the cloeset you'll come to blue with Impateins. Cineraria (Senecio cruentus) will tolerate light shade and give you true blues. You can get blues in Lobelias as well.

However, if you live in the colder northern climates then wait until your first light frost that damages the foliage. This will cause your begonias to go dormant. Dig up your begonia, dust off the soil and let it set out to dry for a few days. When it is dry enough then the branches should pop off easily. After they are dry then place each individual tuber in its own paper bag and place in a box. Remember to check them for rot throughout dormancy.

I bought this little booklet about Annuals, and there is a colored flower bed with all annuals, like zinnia, begonia, sage, impatients, petunias, periwinkle, and african marigold. On the cover, the bed is very full, with no space in beween the flowers. It shows a step by step instructions on the side of the page on how to make it look exacly like the picture., and your supposed to plant the plants about 5 inches apart, and the flowers are still small when they are planted. How long would it take for them to be about a foot wide, and tall? When would I have to plant them next year? All the flowers in the pictures look very full. thanks.

Make sure you get both the tops and undersides of the leaves and use every 5-7 days. One 16 oz bottle of Neem Oil makes 48 gallons of spray.
It makes my plants look AMAZING and they are bug and fungus free. It smells a little funny but not like a commercial insecticide would (Eeew!).

Can someonee please help me with my petunias?
They are in a hanging pot and most have all died off.....I give them plenty to drink and sun..but are they getting too much sun? I thought these were full sun to partial shade flowers? Would miracle grow help? I want to make them thrive again (like there were just a few days ago.) I already trimmed the dead ones off...

So you need to buy another hanging pot %26amp; some potting soil %26amp; separate the plant in half, one in each pot and add the potting soil. Be sure to place some gravel in the bottom for drainage. Good as new %26amp; now you have 2!

What are some good perennials I can plant if my home faces East?
I typically just place some planter of petunias and geraniums....but I'm also looking for some suggestions of plants/flowers that will thrive in the location I need them to be in. I have a townhouse which faces East. I do water my plants in Summer daily. What other plants/flowers will thrive in this location? I've tried petunias, but they tend to dry up and wilt in my sunny locale. Thanks!

ground-6 inches apart (ya don't have to be exact)

pots-1 per bigger pot.
ground- 1 per side of porch (for instance). Potatoes will grow deeper than wide but, vine will be 20/30 feet.
Marigold- they don't like pots here. Ground-10 inches apart.
Peppers:
pots-1 per pot. You can plant a few petunias or impatients around the left over space if ya want. Choose a color that will accent the pepper plant.
ground- 20 inches (there abouts).
petunia same as impatients
tomato:
pot-1 in 5 gallon bucket or same size (deep), cage and stake when you plant.
ground- 30 inches, cage and stake, too.
double impatients more delicate than regular, same instructions.
Water everything thoroughly every time they get dryish or if you see them wilting, just give them a little drink and you can practically watch them perk back up.
Use SuperThrive 1/4 tsp per gallon water when you plant and every 6 months. You can use miracle grow every week or when ya feel like it.
All impatients prefer shade and don't mind a little sun. They don't like hot and will die when it gets hot (June, July)

I have seen Wave Petunias in the stores, and am wondering.. How fast do they spread? And, how much do they spread?

They, too, came back again this year and I just bought a few more to fill in the open spaces. I'm in zone 9 and they do require more watering than other plants, but I only fertilized them once when I planted them. I found a good estimate is to anticipate that they increase 3 fold from the size you plant.

i'ave been feeding cracked corn to muscovy ducks, mothers and babies. they got in my flower bed and ate a white $10 petunia. what can i do or use to discourage them.

Apply it only to the petunias, okay?

Put up a fence around them. You can also make little "cages" out of chicken wire and put your bulbs into them before you plant them. The flowers grow right through them, but the animals can't eat them.
There is some kind of animal repellent you can sprinkle around the garden, but you would have to keep sprinkling it after it rains. I think you can stuff like that at any well-stocked nursery. Then there are things like motion-activated sprinklers you could set up too. Or put up a fake owl around your garden somewhere and the rodents should be scared off by it, you would have to move it from time to time so they don't realize that it's fake. You can find stuff like this at stores or on amazon.com
Reply:Put blood meal (found at nursery or home improvement store), it's not as gross as it sounds, it is just powder. Put a good amout round the base of the plants, but do not mix it in. For some reason the animals don't like it. You might have to replace it every so often if you notice them coming back.

-Harry is not a Horcrux, but he will die to save the entire world (not just the Wizarding world)
-R.A.B. is Regulus Black and he used Kreacher to help him steal the locket.
-I believe that Dumbledore's assumptions about the Horcruxes are correct and I think that the unknown Horcrux is Ravenclaw's wand.
-Neville will severly injure Bellatrix Lestrange and she'll die from her wounds.
-Remus and Bill will come together to kill Greyback.
-Bill and Fleur's wedding will be a joyous occassion.
-There will be an invasion at the Ministry of Magic. Many Ministry employees will die or be put under the Imperious Curse.
-Dumbledore is dead, but we will see him again in some way, shape, or form.
-Sirius is dead, but we will see him again in some way, shape, or form.
-Harry will use the Draught of Living Death to go beyond the veil to talk to Dumbledore and/or Sirius and/or his parents. It is said the the veil between the living and dead worlds is thinner on Halloween and that's when I think he will use the potion.
-Petunia will reveal what she knows about the Wizarding world and Harry's parents, but he'll get a lot more information about his parents (specifically Lily) from Remus.
-Severus Snape will be very important and I think that, no matter how cruel of a person he is, he is good.

this is the truth, im a breeder and my albino corns, have gotten up to 6 1/2 feet long and i own 15 at the moment!

if your looking for plugs that are like an inch in diameter... you will have to find a greenhouse that carries them... garden centers don't fool with them cuz they dry out too quick... and not very profitable... if your looking for the 6 packs or 36 to a flat (called 6-0-6's in the hort world) you can find those at the garden centers...

My petunias have little white spots?
My pertunias have little white spots on the flowers - that just came up over night and look like paint splatters almost. The rest of the plant seems to be fine - anyone have any clues what the crap this is on my flowers and how to get rid of it?

Take a closer look, use a magnifying glass. They could be mealy bugs. If they are mealy bugs you can rinse them off with a water stream.
If the white spots are not little white bugs your plants may have to much or to little fertilizer.

I think that ernon and Petunia finaly accepted him, but only because dudley did,

And that they have children, get postcards with owls every now and then, but aren't that close. I think it's a separate world, and even though they accepted the help, Vernon and Petunia will never accept Harry for who he is. And he's better off without them.
Reply:I believe that Harry, although shocked by Dudleys actions in Book 7 realized that He did care. Vernon and Petunia will accept Harrys presence if Dudley did. I can not see Harry spending loads of time with them but I can see him and Dudley coming to understand normal sibling issues and becoming friends.

And then Harry used the imperious curse on him and made him drive a car off a cliff. Then, before going home to the burrow, young Potter modified the memories of the next door neighbors so that no one remembered that the Dursley's existed.

Reply:Much as I'd love to believe your version I think its more likely that their paths never crossed Harry's again. I can't see Vernon ever having accepted Harry and after Harry's childhood I doubt Harry could ever forgive them enough to want to have anything to do with them as an adult.
I feel he'd probably almost be able to split his life into three as an adult, his life as a kid with them, his life between learning he was a Wizard and the end of Voldemort and finally his life after it when he was finally allowed to live normally. Because of this I doubt he'd want to see much of the Dursleys as they'd always remind him of when he was a kid.
I also doubt that Vernon'd ever overcome his hatred/fear of magic enough to accept or like Harry much but that Petunia could possibly manage to treat Harry as she would a stranger (which would be an improvement) because of Dudley but her deep jealousy of those with magical talent would probably prevent her ever fully accepting Harry.
Dudley and Harry may possibly speak as adults, but again I think not.
I think it'd probably end up with all the Dursley's just trying to act as if the magical community didn't exist and they had no links to it in the end, same as they did until Harry turned eleven.

What kind of perennial plant is this?
I have two plants on the side of my house that bloom In july -aug.they are about 3 ft. tall look like a shrub with soft petunia or morning glory looking flowers -Lt. pink on one plant and white on the other. They are closed in the evening and early morning and open during the day. I looked at some pictures of bush morning glories, but they dont resemble mine, actually the flowers do but not the shrub itself. Mine are very tidy looking like they never need to be pruned or anything. Oh and they are about 2or 3 ft. across. Please help me identify these. thanks

1Tablsp vegetable oil and 1 Tablsp. Ivory dish soap to a gallon of water. Upon coming into contact with an insect the oil will coat and smother the insect. Use this method when it's cooler as it may burn when it's hot out. I spray my roses early in the morning.

j.k rowling said theres more to petunia then meets the eye, what was so special about petunia? all i can think of is when lily was arguing with petunia and she said that petunia wrote a letter to dumbledore asking if she could attend the school, it seems as though there was going to be something or more significance so what else?

Help! I planted a row of petunias in my lawn and I heard they die after a season?
Is this true? I planted them with the thought that they will last for years, but they're annual, so I guess they die after a year and I have to buy new ones and replant them? They don't drop seeds and regerminate or what? Thanks in advance.

You don't say where you live, but in extremely warm winter areas(Florida, parts of southern TX and CA) they may come back, just don't count on it. Try daylilies - they are pretty flowers and continue to grow and spread from year to year.

I have seen volunteer petunias grow on landscape rock, at the edge of a building and parking lot, in the cracks of a sidewalk, etc.
Don't be afraid to replant your petunias (or other annuals) each year. They are pretty inexpensive and give you loads of color and enjoyment during the growing season. Remember to pick off the dead blooms (nip off the seed heads before they takes hold) and you will have loads of blooming petunias this summer and into the fall.

My contribution to the animal kingdom. This spring, all along the patio, I have a mass of petunias. This is interesting, because I live in Iowa and we had a few nights of well below 0 weather. So, they don't usually come back the next year, but I guess you never know.

What are some instances (in the Harry Potter books) of Dudley being spoiled, mean, or manipulative?
Including details, like page #, book, and what the instance was would be very helpful. Also, if you know of any instances of Petunia looking past Dudley' s misbehavios as if it werent happening (specific instances) that would be great. Thanks!

First 2/3 chapters of the first book. Also first 2 chapters of the fifth book (I think).
Reply:i think at the beginng of every book ,there are signs of his misbehavior toward harry but of course till book 7 that we learn that it was more of his parent effect and doing than his own,because then he shows a feeble sort of gratitude and fruendship toward harry.

in the first book, on his birthday he gets 37 presents which ws 1 less than last year so his mother said that they would buy him two presents at the zoo (he originally thaught that he got 36 puthis mother points out another one.)
In the second he makes fun of harry cause its harrys birthday
in the third he gets presents from aunt marge
in the fifth he threatens harry and and blames him for the dementor attack (not unreasonable becasue hary had his wand out, but still)
In the sixth dumbledore mentions how the dursleys didnt love harry and didnt treat him well but at least he escaped the mistreatment that dudley had (not really him being spiled, but a mention of it)
all of these are near the begining of the books near the 2nd 3rd or 4th chapter
Reply:Dudley was generally a spoiled, self-centered mama's boy right up until the beginning of Book 7. The one time I remember Petunia ignoring Dudley being bad was when he stole Harry's cake at the beginning of the first book. Granted, she was probably distracted by Hagrid at the time, but still . . .
Reply:Just read the parts of the first book where Harry is living with or visiting that family. You will find lots of examples.
