How do I keep chipmonks from eating my petunias?

I had a petunia plant setting in an old chair. Each day more of the plant was eaten, until is was entirely gone. I saw a chipmonk near by, and assume that it was the destructive animal. Is there a way to keep it out without killing it?

Some people swear by fox urine, which you can buy at some organic nurseries. I'd probably try a liberal dusting of cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes first.
Reply:Sometimes the scent of mothballs will keep rodents out of the garden, its worth a try if you don't have dogs who might eat them
