What happened to my petunias?
My guess it is the intense heat of your area. Give your petunias a good dose of water everyday. When more moderate temperatures prevail, the blooms should return. Other things about petunias you have to be concerned about: (1) you have to deadhead the dead blooms before they go to seed; (2) I usually break off the stems or trim them back a little to promote branching and new flower bud production -- petunias can easily go viney on you, stop producing healthy flowers later in the season, and even die; (3) I also like to give my petunias a dose of Miracle Gro every once and a while during the growing season, especially after I've trimmed them back; and (4) I like to cultivate around the plants periodically -- not any thing deep, mind you, but just enough to break up the soil surface a little. Petunias can bloom for you pretty much all season and into the fall if you take care of them properly, either in a bed or in a pot. I've found that there is a natural blooming cycle for petunias, and intense heat or especially cool nights of autumn does slow that down. Once you've grown petunias for many years, you get used to this annual. (Oh, and by the way, I did have luck bringing a petunia inside for the winter -- it bloomed and bloomed and bloomed.)
Reply:Depending upon where you live, it could just be they are dried out. We're in Ohio and it has been very hot and very dry for the past week or so. As soon as I watered mine and gave them some extra fertilizer, they perked right up.
Reply:If it was just that they got too hot and dry they bounce back amazingly with additional water. No way of really knowing for sure based just on you description.
Reply:As many have said here already, petunias are annuals and eventually they do die off as the days/sunlight get(s) shorter. If, as you say, nothing else has changed, that's probably the explanation. If you experienced the heat and drought much of the country did a few weeks back, the plants may be stressed, especially if they are in pots.

Try cutting them back if they are leggy and boost them with some Miracle Grow and a good deep soaking. If that doesn't help, they are probably just finished for this year. Check your neighbors, too, if theirs' are still blooming then there must be something else going on. Good luck.
Reply:buy new ones
Reply:water them more frequently...especially if you're in a hot climate. Mine looked dead...but after watering them 2x daily they perked up and are blooming again
Reply:Not much. This is the time of year when those types of plants begin to give up the ghost. They are annuals (the petunias) and their lifespan in only 6 months. Also, the heat in many areas of the country sort of shortned the life of many plants this year. Toss them.

Reply:It's the heat. Petunias like cooler weather than we have been having of late.
Reply:Petunias are seasonal and not meant to last through the summer. Depending on where you live they are good only as spring or spring/early summer plants. You need to replant with something that will take the heat of late summer or just wait until fall and replant with a fall-winter seasonal plant.
Reply:cat pee! i bet a cat peed on them
