What was the story with remember my last? (harry potter)?

Petunia got a howler from Dumbledore saying remember my last. I thought it was going to be explained in the last book but I didn't catch an explanation. Does anyone understand it?

What was the story with remember my last? (harry potter)?
I thought we would get more of an explanation, such as why saving harry would be imoportant to petunia
Reply:hmm.. your right. i don't remember it either. i guess i didn't catch it. or mayeb it wsn't said?

maybe it referred to soemthign happening, when Petunia begged him to let her attend and then she didn't want to go?

or wait... wasn't somethign said about how he had arrived before, saying something about harry or magic?

hmmmmmm
Reply:It happened on pg 40 in OOTP, after Harry and Dudley were attacked by the dementors, Vernon was yelling "get out" and wanted to kick Harry out of their house, he was tired of all the owls, the magic, and now his son's attack...I thought the words, "remember my last", referred to Lilly's last request to her sister... asking Petunia to take care of Harry...Dumbledore reminded Petunia of her promise made to her sister Lily..

Now Knight1192a has made me go dig up my older books...I love these discussions...
Reply:It's just referring to the letter that Dumbledore wrote and left with baby Harry, explaining the blood-enchantment and why Harry has to stay with the Dursley's until he is 17.
Reply:It's explained as the letter left to the Dursley's when Harry was left on the step. That's all. :)
Reply:It was stating Remember my last as in my last letter when Harry was left there as a baby and he ha to stay there until 17 so his mother's charm would last but that was all explained before book 7 even came out and I was hoping it would explain about Aunt Petunia more but besides the fact that she was jealous of Lilly and the fact that she wrote to Dumbledore doesn't help us undrstand her more i was a little disappointed with that but maybe since it was a small detail JKR wanted us to invent the rest ourselves
Reply:I think that was explained in the 6th book at the end, but i forgot what it meant, i think it is just about how she has to let harry stay with her until he is 17, because at the time she was trying to kick him out, and if he did his mothers charm would be broken. And so dumbledore was reminding tuney of this
Reply:It was at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore sent Aunt Petunia a Howler saying this, because Uncle Vernon had been ready to kick Harry out of the house, and Petunia had promised she'd keep him at least until he was seventeen so that he would still be protected. So he was basically saying "remember my last request."
Reply:The protection Harry's mother gave to Harry doesn't just protect him, it also protects the Dursleys. Because Petunia is Lily's sister and therefore related to Harry by blood, as long as the Dursley's take care of Harry and allow him to call their home his, he will be protected against Voldemort and the Death Eaters while he remains at #4 Privet Drive and calls it his home. Which means that they will also be protected. The minute it is no longer his home it is no longer a safe haven for Harry and Voldemort and the Death Eaters can attack the Dursleys at will.

When Dumbledore left Harry at the Dursley's, he left a letter for Petunia explaining this. The howler Dumbledore sends to her is a reminder about that letter and that protection. Even if she doesn't care for Harry, she still loves Dudley. So it's in her own son's best intrest, as well as that of her husband and herself, that she sees to it that Harry remains with them.
