How can I get rid of these beetles that are eating my plants?

I have these beetles that are black with these soft rainbow colored shell on top, that are eating my basil plants and petunias ect... They leave this skeleton effect on the leaves and I can't seem to get rid of them. There are a lot of them too. I don't want to kill my plants with sprays and I want to be able to eat my basil instead of the beetles eating it! Thanks for the help.

Insecticidal soap...

Available at any home and garden store.

Just be sure to rinse your veggies thoroughly before consuming...
Reply:Definitely Japanese Beetles. Setting out the traps helps, but also tends to attract all of the beetles in the neighborbood, so you actually end up with MORE beetles in your yard. Insecticidal soaps work, especially for plants you will eat. I use an insecticide called Sevin for ornamental plants. It comes in powder form or as a spray. Very effective - also controls fleas, spiders, etc.
Reply:If they are Japanese bettles, set some traps up wind from your plants. You can find them at most hardware stores.
