Planted petunias yesterday - do I need to water them yet?

I have a notoriously black thumb, but I am going to try to plant stuff this year. I planted some petunias yesterday and noticed that both the earth in the ground and the earth on the roots of the petunias was damp. I don't want to kill them by overwatering (having done that once already), so do I need to water the plants after planting them or should I wait a bit for the ground to dry out? Thanks.

It's good that you're checking the moisture and not just pouring on water! Good first step toward greening that black thumb. Here's a little more advice for you.. Go to wal-mart (or the garden center of your choice) and buy a jar of Osmocote. It's a controlled release fertilizer. Sprinkle some of the Osmocote around your plantings.. That way, if you forget about your petunias, they'll still get fed.

Good luck!
Reply:I hope you added vermiculite and potting soil the the dirt where you planted the petunias. Tilling the soil and watering every day in summer are optimum. You can also fertilize.
Reply:i would wait until the ground dries at least and inch above the soil, depending on climate I water my petunias every 3 days or when they look like they are getting ready to wilt, make sure you "deadhead" the plants (pinch off dead flowers at base of flower) I have had petunias that have lasted 3 years but eventually, the plant will get to leggy so sometimes you need to pinch the plant back. they are the easiest plant to grow, just dont water to much .
