Something is eating my petunias - I think it's a salamander or lizard. How can I stop the eating?

Sounds more like snails or slugs to me. Salamanders and lizards eat bugs! Use a line of slug bait or put out beer in a low saucer (the happy way to die!)

I've heard that you can stop that kind of thing by spraying something nasty tasting over the plants. Example; pepper mixed in water, or maybe even soap. Mix them in water in a spray bottle, spray it lightly on the plants.
