How do I keep birds from setting up a nest in my hanging plants?

I love my hanging plants, but for some reason, birds love to set up nests in them. Try as I might, what with watering, puffing, maintaining and watching, I still seem to lose this batlle.

Once the nest is set, and the eggs are laid, I cannot and will not touch it. I just let my lovely flowering petunia plant die and become a condo with a view.

I would never harm the nest, nor upset the process of baby birds, but I would like to come up with a way to avoid this.

Thanks!

Maybe try putting something in the pots that stick up like popsicle sticks, skewers, or something like that. (They put some kind of spiky rods on buildings to keep pigeons from roosting there.)

What a treat though, to see a bird family up close like that! I know you're getting tired of it, but I wouldn't mind if they'd use one of my pots at least once. Good luck!
Reply:Glad you asked this question. I have snakes coming onto my porch at night trying to get to the baby birds. I certainly appreciate the answers you have been given. I am pulling out my few remaining strands of gray hair now! lol
Reply:don't know if this will work try lowering your hanging plants or placing them where people often can be seen so they will avoid it. hell if this didn't work put a sign there with the writings " I love bird's egg for breakfast."
Reply:get down to your local hardware, walmart, or whatever and get a spray can of wd 40. spray the container all around and watch the birds stick up there noses to the smell. maybe even hang something you can keep sprayed. won,t hurt the flowers . lol

Well you have a few options. Your first, cheapest and easiest, would be to take a few of your hair clippings and sprinkle them on the soil so that your scent is on the soil. Second you can urinate on a cotton ball and stick it on top of the soil again cheap and easy (although gross depending on your life style). Third, buy some reflective take and wrap a small amount of it around the hanging basket or even jsut a few pieces at the hook of the hanging basket. Goodluck.

P.S The hair clippings and cotton ball would need to be reapplied every two weeks. Just a small amoutn nothing ridiculous.
