I need to know what type of flowers to plant in window boxes. I have 5 window boxes under the house eaves that don't get natural rain water. I am a bad waterer so I need something that can go several days without water. I have tried wildflowers, petunias, dwarf sunflowers, and marigolds. No luck with those. I is mostly sun in NC. Any ideas?

MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE.
How would you like to plant all your favorates back in those boxes %26amp; still have them looking good with you twice a week schedule?
Go to your nursery %26amp; pick up a small packet of med. sized soil polymers. mix them into the soil of the window boxes at the rate the package suggests. water the soil well, every day for 3 days before you plant. Water again the day you plant, and if you miss a few days, no biggy.
The polymers look like grains of rock salt when dry. Wet, each will swell to size of a dime holding water in reserve for the roots to use for days. As they dry out the slowly shrink, add water again %26amp; poof.
You should get twice the time between normal waterings with the use of the polymers.
Just in case you still want some of my ideas for your boxes (with or without polymer use) here are a few ideas.
Some will hang over the side, some bushier with color. All get along without alot of water ONCE ESTABLISHED! That means for the first week or two, YOU have to make sure they get water to give them a start.
Achillea yarrow bedding, your choice of color.
Armeria maritima, common thrift.
Verbena, bedding your choice of color.
Sedum stonecrop whiskey nose.
Oenothera dwarf, evening primrose.
Linum perenne.
Echeveria (mixed)
Mix %26amp; match, all will work well, AFTER THEY GET ESTABLISHED. If you can't give a little extra time the first couple of weeks, go to WalMart %26amp; grab some plastic Roses. There isn't anything anybody can do for you.
Reply:garden dok has my vote.
Reply:Petunias work well here, (Wi.) in window boxes or hanging baskets. Other plants that like sun are geraniums, both upright %26amp; vining, can go without water, for a few days, should fertilize about middle of summer. There are pansies, all colors, celosia which come in bright yellow, red, pink, snapdragons, zinnias, to name a few. I would suggest putting out buckets, gabage containers, etc. to collect rainwater. I still do this to save on water bill, also if you have water softenter, you have to let water sit for at least an hour before you water plants, salt is not good for plants. If you can't remember to water, you should use mulch around top of soil, this keeps soil moist longer. There are a few vines that like sun, vinca for one, also goes good between plants, unless you plant the vining geraniums. Experiment w/different plants, go to your area greenhouse where they can also help you, or go to library and check book on plants. (summer annuals) Good Luck!
Reply:There's really no flowering plant that can survive without water. My suggestion is for you to plant hardy green plant like ivy then add natural looking silk flowers.
