What plants grow well in wood chips?

My apartment has a little round wood-chip plot I'd like to plant in. My landlord had hostas in it last summer. (Hostas are annuals, right? So I can tear up the dead plants? She doesn't take care of anything.) I'd like flowers ... do petunias or pansies grow well in wood chips?

What plants grow well in wood chips?
Wood chips are acidic. You will have to grow plants used to acid soil conditions like mini rodedendrons, ezaleas, roses, holly, and ferns. Hostas are shade plants, so if the plot is in the shade begonias and impatients like shade, but not that much acid. Consider digging holes and planting plants in their pots (large enough to accomodate growth for the whole growing season) with normal soil in it, just don't cover the potted dirt with the chips.
Reply:Nothing grows in wood chips. You need to move them aside and dig a hole in the soil. When you're done, replace the chips.
Reply:Hostas are not annuals, they will come back. Wood chips make good ground cover for about anything, except maybe cactus.
